A Day In History
Amazing how a single Newspaper Article can trigger so many memories for so many folks.
The topics that this article included without really knowing it for those living those times so long ago came to mind while reading it.
A single photograph can say so much without the use of words.
Looking at the photo and later the additional photos in the article gave rise to memories from back then.
Huey and CH-34 Helicopters, Lam Son 719, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Life Magazine, combat operations, losses of aircraft and friends.....efforts to bring them home....the US Army unit in Hawaii that does the searches for the Missing.
Above all it reminds us how fickle Life can be....and how the Grim Reaper goes about his trade...taking some and sparing others.
War is an ugly thing....something we should always remember when we talk about it.
No dramatic music plays in the background like a Hollywood movie when it is going on.

For Russia they put other reason to reject:

Another photo from another time, an old friend of mine, sadly passed on, lost his nose to cancer, beat that, lung cancer right after, he fought valiantly.
Docs thought Agent Orange, his outfit operated down in weeds.
Hell of a guy.

Agent Orange and related herbicides that were used have horrible health consequences for those that have been exposed.
Some of my health issues are related to that.
We flew in it...sprayed with it...drank water that had it in it.....and years later we saw the problems that exposure brought on.
The Vietnamese certainly have endured real problems too.
It is interesting that the EU and Russia internets have problems accessing a US News Paper website.

For those having issues with the GDPR thing, a VPN set to the USA gets around the problem. Though I realise that not all subscribe to a good VPN, some of the free versions might work?

He was an avid golfer, everyday he could, out on the course.
Unfortunately prosthetics don’t tan, drawing attention after the second day.
The doctors made him a second “tanned” one, just for the summer.

At least he had an excuse for being a "brown nose" in the Winter if his duty proboscis was in for maintenance!

Great clips. I still have a hard time with Nam. I did a lot of traveling in country between 57/64. Attached to USAF MAAG and then MACV as a control tower maintenance specialist on the equipment we were giving the ARVN. When I got out in 64, the
US Army called me and asked if I would like to be a pilot with them. Well,I had to tell the guy that I wore glasses and couldn't be a pilot.
Oh yeah he said....we will make you a Huey pilot and a Warrant Officer W1. Well it was tempting....sort of the family business...
as my Dad had been a WO (W4) and spent 38 years in the Army.
But I had seen enough to know where I would go and what I would do.
And what I would do mostly was die.
The attrition of those guys was outrageous....so I sadly said no.......a decision that allowed me to live 82 years....so far.
I still have a real hard time when I think of those Huey Jockeys.
And again....thanks to those guys armed with cameras that documented the hell that was Vietnam. They were heroes in their own right.

I recently spent three weeks in Vietnam.Hanoi to Con Dao and points in between.

Magic place isn't it!
I very much enjoyed my two trips back....and except for some health issues....I would have retired there near Hoi An just south of Da Nang.

I personally believe that it will happen.
Hoi-An was beautiful.
Although going down with a dose of dengue for 4 days was a little unpleasant !
