Tornado GR1 v F40
Tornado GR1 v F40
I am in a FB group that has been reminiscing when a Ferrari F40 raced against a 14 Squadron Tornado at Brueggen. We all agreed it happened but memories have faded and don’t seem to come to an agreement when this event took place. Is anybody able to shed light when this occurred? I will defer from providing any further information so it doesn’t influence anybody’s thinking apart from one clue which we are agreed upon, it was definitely before Operation Granby.
According to this eBay ad (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TAKE-IT-T...-/143307066815) it was in a 1990 supplement to the now defunct Performance Car magazine.

I was serving over the period of 89 to 91 at the time, but can't recall the exact date this occurred. I do remember it though. Rumour was they stripped the jet to the bare bones and minimum fuel to give it a fighting chance. Looked good to watch from my limited view from BFI 2 LOL.
By no means the first car v aeroplane contest.S Met O Scampton in his very variant and modified Vauxhall Chevette 2300 HSR versus a Vulcan. About 1982 I think.
At the time I was his boss at Bawtry. He was reticent about who won so I gather he lost.
When he drove me to the pub for lunch he frightened the sh1t out of me. The car had amazing acceleration. We became airborne over a hump back bridge. Driver told me "very important to keep wheel steady so it lands in a straight line" Yes but..
[I fear that I have told this tale before .........]

The Met. Office loves/loved eccentrics, such as S Met O Coningsby and his lurid ties and waistcoats. S Met O Valley had a famous stutter, S Met O Cranwell was always immaculately turned out.
In the late 70s we had a quarter-mile drag race between a Mirage IIIO and a Lamborghini Countach. Lambo quicker off the mark as the Mirage couldn't light the A/B while still on the brakes, but pipped at the post by the Mirage.
Same story, lightest aircraft, scrawniest pilot, minimum fuel. The Lambo owner thought that was a bit unfair, but anyway he took the loose change out of his pocket and had a piddle. I was flying the helicopter and got left at the start, poor old UH-1B didn't have much acceleration.

I'm going to stick my neck out and say the aircraft. At least the Jag could hold max reheat on the brakes and the Abingdon Jags were always clean, i.e. no tanks, no pylons. I once saw a display Jag (Clean and partial fuel) take off from Abingdon's short runway using only about half of it.
