Irish Air Corps pilots to train with Royal Australian Air Force

(Irish) Air Corps pilots are to be sent for training with the Royal Australian Air Force under proposals approved by the Cabinet on Thursday.

The move is aimed at improving capacity for training pilots in the Air Corps, which has been affected by a shortage of experienced flying officers in recent years. The plan was put forward by the Minister of State for Defence Paul Kehoe.

Out of nothing more than idle curiosity, does RAAF pilot training include fast jet experience?

Intriguing to see from the link that:

"Mr Kehoe’s plans would see the Air Corps pilots undertake three or four months training in Australia flying fixed-wing twin-engined aircraft."

followed by:

"The Department of Defence has indicated that such specific flight training was not available in EU countries."

From the report these will be qualified pilots being tagged into command roles, I would look at it as a pilot exchange, they probably pilot exchanged to squadrons running wedgetails / P-8's / tankers so they get some "command time"

Australia doesn't have and twin engine trainers pilots come in train on old ct-4's to PC-9's or newer pilots straight toPC-21. Then off into specific training ie fast jets, transports

Perhaps the Irish Air Corps took one look at the ongoing farce of UK MFTS' failure to deliver ME training on the Phenom and thought better of even asking for a cost estimate?

No doubt they'll have fun learning about the Australian view of PFI? For those who don't know, it means "Poms are F*****g Idiots!"...

Best guess would be QFI training and subsequent instructing experience. I am still having a bit of trouble seeing what's in it for the RAAF to make it no cost.
