Ukrainian Su-27 down

It looks like both pilots were sadly killed. The backseater was an ANG Eagle driver. RIP chaps.

Sad news indeed.

And some other interesting stories via that link. F15 from LK doing cable engagement, and a Russian drone shot down.

Yes, the guy in the back seat of that F-15D is a professional photographer who was taking some official images of the exercise.

I've been seeing photos from the exercise on Instagram. Looks like it was going really successfully.

My sympathies to the families.

The Eagle driver has been named as Lt. Col. Seth "Jethro" Nehring, assigned to the 194th FS. So sad - R.I.P. Sir.

I don't know if the Flanker driver has been named.

It was named shortly after the crash: Col. Petrenko. While the name of the US officer is not named in Ukrainian and Russian media.

Some information was published yesterday about the aircraft itself. They say that the plane was built and put in service in 1991 and then "written off" and conservated in 2009 because the resource of major systems exhausted the value. But in 2014 it was put in service again with no serious modernization or repair (by hearsay), just got new colours.
Nevertheless, there is no information so far about any major system failure reported by the crew prior to the crash.

There are a few countries whose aircraft I would just not step foot into, and Ukraine is one of those.

I met Seth a few times when I lived in California. I flew with a friend into the Fresno Chandler Airshow and Seth and another 194th FS pilot came to look around our airplane. A few weeks later they hosted me out at the squadron and let me fly the sim and have a tour. He told me he lived to fly and was a real “sky whore”. A good guy.

For Seth and Col. Petrenko Ivan Nikolaevich

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, --and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of --Wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air...
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark or even eagle flew --
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

He was with South West even when I met him years ago. Hence his “sky whore” comment. He said if he wasn’t in an F16 he was in a 737. Fair skies sir.

The public is invited to celebrate his life as Jethro is laid to rest. Thanks to Southwest Airlines for bringing their fallen airman home.

Lt. Col. Seth "Jethro" Nehring will be coming home Saturday. He will be flown by Southwest Airlines directly to the 144th Fighter Wing's ramp arriving at approx. 11:30 am. There will be a memorial for family members, invited guests of the family, fellow Airmen and their families before the graveside service at the Clovis Cemetery located at 305 N. Villa Ave. at 2:00 pm. At 2:10 pm, there will be a F-15 Eagle missing-man formation flown overhead as part of the military honors for Lt. Col. Nehring.
For those who would like to show their respect as Lt. Col. Nehring is transported to his final resting place, the procession will depart the base at approx. 1:00 pm and proceed to the cemetery via the following route:

McKinley to Clovis (East)
Clovis to Fifth (North)
Fifth to Bullard (West)
Bullard to Villa (West)
Villa to Clovis Cemetery (North)
