Poseidon and Typhoon to be based at Kinloss?

Report in the ever-reliable P&J says both types will be based at Kinloss - temporarily at least - during upgrade work at Lossie. Bets this might be the first step toward sanity and it ends up being something more tan temporary? https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp...r-it-was-shut/

I think the Army have got their feet under the table at Kinloss. No chance of getting them out.

The Army have a small footprint at Kinloss-some money spent on getting the runway sorted where needed and it's good to go. It seems to be the obvious choice, and if I possessed a hat I would be prepared to eat it.

Can't be too much requirement for Kinloss runway works as its already used as an RLG for Lossie-based Typhoons.

The runway at Kinloss is neither long enough, nor strong enough for a fully laden P8. The runway was due for a full refurbishment about 10 years ago and it has only been patched ever since - it would take a complete rebuild and lengthening of the runway for it to become a P8 base. I will take your bet that the P8s will never be based there, other than temporarily, mainly because the P8 infra work at Lossie is already in build.

Roland, out of curiosity what is the LCN of a fully laden P8 in comparison to a fully laden Nimrod, and the comparison of distances for take off in nil wind/zero weather conditions at Kinloss, including all the magic things about V1,distance to 50' and all that other pilot sh1t (As Goose would have it)? Just asking.

Regarding the P8 and use of Kinloss, for the purpose of a Bolthole it would be accepted that they would be getting ab with a partial fuel load. This would obviously limit some operations but not training and stats bashing.

Runway refurbishment at Lossie? Next on the list for closure then! Have they had a new Control Tower and/or a new HAS complex too, or either one planned? If so, closure's a racing certainty.

Please, enlighten us with your inside knowledge, bearing in mind which Party was in Government when Kinloss & Leuchars were closed.

Do you really think that HM's RAF will maintain a huge base like Lossie (4 Typhoon and 2 Poseidon Sqns) in an independent Scotland?

I know you will say that the iScAF will use Lossie, but do you really believe that? Much more likely any AF will be too small to have stand-alone bases and much more likely it would share civilian airport real-estate (e.g. Prestwick) .

I can't say I'm not happy about the QRA going to Leuchars, albeit temporarily. However, why is the QRA North going to Leuchars and not Kinloss with all the other Typhoons?

Presumably because Typhoon QRA needs to be kept warm and dry in a HAS with all the bells and whistles required for live ordnance.

Do you really think a rUK Air Force WOULD NOT want to use a base with such strategic value as Lossie or Kinloss. Access to North Sea & North Atlantic, ranges such as Tain and Garvie plus shed loads of LFA. 10% of the current defence assets of all services will devolve to an Independent Scotland, that's agreed. Therefore, I could see a pragmatic arrangement being made for use of Lossie and/or Kinloss. And, where is rUK going to base it's nukes? Just some thoughts.

Ps, good suggestion of joint use of assets. None like the Scots for thrift. And, there's plenty of previous, Stornoway, for example.

Alwayslookingup, I'm sure this question has been asked an awful lot over the years, but, and I ask as a Scotsman, what is the evidence that Scotland ill be independent once it sinks itself, whenever that may be, into the EU? I place my cards on the table, I didn't get a vote in the 2014 referendum because I'm domiciled in Welwyn Garden City, if I had lived in Scotland I don't know it my perspective would have been different, but I was glad the vote went to remain in the union. As for the 2016 referendum, I voted to leave, because having been happy to have been a part of closer union with Europe as well I couldn't understand why, and still can't the need to just accept an inevitable and quite openly move toward a single state entity. I'm minded of those, whom before a referendum on EU membership was announced, who said that Britain would one day join the Euro, we'd have to apparently. Then there was the seemingly laughing in the face of David Cameron when trying to keep us out of some of the EU rules which our Government weren't particularly happy about. I have no idea where it will all end up, but I know where I don't want it to! But I just can't understand he SNP craving to hand Scotland over lock, stock and keg to control by people, who whether elected in principal or not will have fa less affiliation with Scotland than you imagine English people do. Or indeed, other Scots and Welsh and Irish people in Westminster. The strategic importance of Kinloss, Lossiemouth and Leuchars, I'm sure are evident to those in the post. But why make their existence a subject for crowing and finger pointing? If Scotland gained independence, would you want the RAF and the Army, and what will eventually be the US Navy and Royal Norwegian Air Force to move out? or just thae Bludy English!

Kinloss seems to have been built with pure asbestos. I wouldn't go back for any deal. Lossie might be the best bet after all.
