I'm not criticising! I think retaining the institutional knowledge and expertise alone is well worth the money. I was just pointing out that it seems odd to get so worked up about Tornado engines.
It has become normal for the public to see and hear of it being deployed in the many and various conflicts it has been used in over the last 35+ years.
Whenever the RAF has been called into action Tornado has been the go to aircraft of choice.
It has been used in the front line for about 40% of the life of the RAF and while of course it is not the same as Spitfire Hurricane or Lancaster it has in fact been the most important jet aircraft in the RAF.
Why don't you put them in crates and ship them to Burma?

Was such a spittle-flecked outburst really necessary, especially when it has less than two fifths of the square root of sweet FA to do with the original subject matter of the thread, which is how the system disposes of obsolete or near obsolete kit?
As another contributor has noted already, much as it should offend a lot of us, by the same token it does not surprise many of us. Its what happens when you have weak and ineffective leadership at senior political and military levels and a civil service staffing roles where the culture is to do the bare minimum possible in order to collect ones pension without getting fired first. Sadly, it is a culture that has been creeping endemically and exponentially across pretty much the entirety of public service since 1997.

1997? How about 1967, when we were closing RAF Stations immediately after major refurbishment of runways, infrastructure and MQs? It was always a bad sign when such work was started.

A friend in low places tells me the MoD is disposing of new, crated, Tornado engines; tipping them into skips and paying for their disposal rather than receiving payment for the high grade recyclable metals used in their construction - I bet they'd 'sell' their old mobile telephones though!
Thus far, 30+ engines have been disposed of with a unit value of between £5-7 million!
The Tornados replacement, the F35s, have been flown once, in the hover - to satisfy the Brass no doubt - but are uncertain of their participation in the 100 Flypast on the 10th.
They've stripped out all the avionics from the F35s, binned them and are busy around the clock refitting them with new avionics in makeshift tents (hangars not yet finished) - what??
So where are the heads on a plate?
We don't need more taxes - just people in charge who know what they're doing!
