RAFGSA Lycoming Chipmunk

Of the many details of the DHC Chipmunk T10 and other variants that abound in the form of manuals and Pilots Notes etc there is little or nothing I can find with regard to the Lycoming engine Chipmunks that were thus fitted for glider towing at the various RAFGSA clubs around the country. One would have thought they are a considerable different aeroplane than their more sedate cousins but would be grateful if anyone can direct me to any information that may be available with regard to this variant

Many thanks

Looks like the relevant Flight Manual (DH2.3) is available from DH Support at Duxford.

Apart from a slight increase in rate-of climb, opposite-foot forward during takeoff and aerobatics prohibited, I wouldn't think there is much difference.

Not a lot of difference. The engine was lighter and cheaper to maintain, but the real performance benefit while towing came from the finer pitch Hoffman composite prop. The rate of climb was quite improved from the Gypsy with Fairey Reed metal prop. it also descended quicker which is a big benefit for a tug for rapid turnarounds.

No they don’t, the RAFGSA have sold all of their Chippys and use Turbo Falkes now for Aerotow and their PA-25 Pawnee G-SATN. The Lycoming Chippy at Halton now belongs to a private syndicate of members of the Service flying club and gliding club.

Not a lot different to the other Chippies except for the towing gear (that was fitted to some Gypsy Chippies as well) and the Lycoming installation by Dick Stratton. Here are some under cowling shots of the installation

Different instruments

I hope that helps?

Probably the biggest difference with the Supermunk over the Standard one was that you didn't have to spend 1 hour per flying hour cleaning waste engine oil off the airframe
Loved flying both types & miss them terribly.
