I don't own this space under my name. I should have leased it while I still could

They were very unlucky that the flare actually worked. On a SAROP in the 70s we had a 50% failure rate.

Reading the reports, it seems that the co-pilot was the handling pilot throughout. Was that Maritime practice, or was it so the Captain/first pilot could maintain control over the whole incident and manage the varied necessary responses. Seems, if I may say so, to have been a hugely challenging incident brilliantly handled by the whole crew

Interesting concept. Is the trooper that charges the machine gun nest while tanked up on booze and adrenaline a hero or just someone acting under the affluence? Plenty of examples of that from the ages. Heroes to me but...

It was the co-pilot who landed the 777 that just made it across the boundary fence at LHR whilst the captain tried to sort the problem, so the Nimrod crew may have set a precedent for handling such a situation

On Nimrod the First and Second pilots swapped seats every other sortie.

Ie the Co could be in the LHS as handling pilot with the 1st Pilot in the RHS.

To me it's the choice element that makes a hero.
I agree.
This is not to say so as a reflection on the skill and fortitude of the crew, but a reflection on we who overuse/misuse the word hero.
The crew in this case should be proud of their response and the outcome - they justly deserve their actions to be recognised.
