Fine looking vessels.
And another ‘Kaga’ to follow up on the Pearl Harbor original!

Yes. This has been done before. Lots.

If you search MRA4 before posting, you’ll find what you need.

Good discussion, but think the main issue with the MRA4 was it's lack of airworthiness. Other than that it ticked all the boxes...

I was going to ask this question when the F-15 crashed in June but didn't, however seeing this thread back up I thought I would ask it now.
When looking at sites such as FR24 during the search for the F15 which crashed in June I saw many aircraft tracks but nothing for a P8. Was one there?
Do the P8s hold any form of SAR readiness as the Nimrod did? Do we have enough available to have one on continual 24 hr SAR? Does, or indeed can, the P8 carry a SAR pack of any description which they can drop to survivors?
Before anyone jumps down my throat this is not P8 bashing just a question.

RAAF are using the UNIPAC III SAR kit on their P-8’s The aircraft can carry five kits in the weapons bay, with each kit containing a 20-man life raft plus survival gear, food & water and comms. Since the RAF have only received two P-8’s to date, I guess it’s early days, but it has a declared SAR role so I think it likely they will have the same or similar kits available.

The P8 doesn’t feature at all in the Maritime and Coastguard Agency‘s next contract (2024+) assumptions. It was specifically excluded during their industry day briefing in May.

All of which makes sense. Civilian SAR around the UK is the responsibility of the Department of Transport. If the DoT wanted to use a P-8A for such purposes they would have to request it from the MoD. The ac does have a JPR role, I.e. military only SAR.

They are going to individually name them? Hoping for a little more imagination with the next seven...Here's some prompters:

The Cold Barrier
The Jolly Scrub
Bouy 15
Delayed Flight Meal
The Kimberley
Four Barrels and a Stripper (ok, that's not happening )
Roger Wait Out

On a serious note, I do hope one is named after John Cruickshank VC, who was not only one of the few CC WW2 VC, but is a native of the North East of Scotland and the only surviving WW2 VC.

I see a Kilo Class submarine transited the channel today, escorted by RN. I wonder if a P-8 went to take a look - good practice for the sensor operators.

First Operation for RAF Poseidon tracking Russian Warship

On Monday morning, a P-8A Poseidon from 120 Squadron based at Kinloss Barracks demonstrated its speed and readiness by completing a prolonged overwatch of the Russian warship, Vasily Bykov, as it passed through the North Sea......

A pity that Voyager cannot refuel it.....

The Luftwaffe are phasing out their A310MRTT soon, but although it doesn't have a boom, EADS have a 310 which does. Perhaps a feasibility study to add a boom to the A310 MRTT to equip a small squadron of 4 to refuel P-8A, Rivet Joint, P-7...and perhaps F-35A?

Only if AirTanker operate them. Remember, their contract calls for them to be the sole provider of inflight refuelling services to the RAF.

Red face

About time, some of the Voyagers were upgraded with a boom for that role really!
