"Captain's compliments, Chief, and could you manage to keep the noise down a little? There are U-boats popping up complaining about the noise!"

Don't worry, the Grey Funnel Line have a new recruitment initiative

The 'we are here' factor can deter and keep an enemy beyond arms length
Even better would be 'we are somewhere but you don't know where'.

I have never heard much talk about noise abatement in surface warships. UK hunter killers in the 1980s would routinely be able to detect US warships leaving port from the UK side of the Atlantic on their passive "waterfall" displays. They could even type identify them.

I think this is all a bit of a herring rouge.

Reports that the fault with the Trafalgar boats is terminal and the entire fleet may never sail again. Limiting the RN to the couple of Astute boats they have - and having to ask the USN to provide protection for the Vanguard boomers.

How spookily prophetic seems the inscription on John Player fags - 'Navy Cut'

Quite a few "if's" in that article - the ciritical point will be if they detect similar "irrepairable" cracks in the other boats - even tho they are in maintenance it may be for something else altogether

The Trafalgars are due to decommision as follows:-

Torbay 2017
Trenchant 2019
Talent 2021
Triumph 2022

Thereare three Astutes in service -Astute, Ambush & Artful with deliveries

Audacious 2018
Anson 2020
Agamemnon 2022
"Ajax" 2024

They could juggle the decommisioning times on the remaining Trafalgars - or park them "in case of emergency" until enough Astutes are available.......

That would be the first time I have ever seen a nuke boat reactor schematic - if that is truly accurate I'm genuinely stunned.

If T45 is designed to be an AA picket then maybe its deliberately left "noisy" to be a deterrent. Makes a no fly zone?

Interestingly I once read that when King George VI (I think) was serving in the Royal Navy, he became so acclimatised to the ships noise that when he came back to land he couldn't sleep unless he had a tape recording of the ship playing at his bedside. As he could no longer sleep if it was too quiet!
