Visit Nellis BX/PX

Guys. Question - Current serving RAF visiting Nevada with young son in the summer. Several year since I've been to Nellis and only ever while on ex. Is it possible to be on holiday and get onto the site just to visit the PX/BX with the boy prior to flying home civ air from McCarren. If so....How? Thanks

Did it some years ago while on hols with Mrs SB. Once through the 'gate' with F1250 and a smart salute from the guard just had to remember the way, then went in, no questions. Mind, security may be a little tighter now.

Remember going there and the girl at the checkout had never seen a F1250 before, so the manager had to be called. He assured her that it was ok to take our money! We had taken a Jaguar out there for "hot and dry" trials - never did hear how it got on!

I don't think the BX is that great there TBH.
Maybe so, but the worst BX was better than the best NAAFI, so it's all relative!

I doubt it - and almost certainly not worth the hassle. I do have authorized access to the Military Uniform Store only (with Civil Air Patrol / US Air Force Auxiliary ID). A few years ago the prices in the Nellis AFB BX were not significantly cheaper for anything than in large chain shops in Las Vegas. It's nothing like the savings you could get at Ramstein compared to civilian shops in Germany or the UK. It is more there as an on-base convenience.

Feel free to PM me if you want a good steer on prices / store chain name for anything in particular such as clothing, cameras etc. I've pretty much started from scratch after immigrating here 7 years ago.

If you really want to go, I used to every year on holiday, then the last time they insisted on a NATO Travel Order as well as ID. Easy to get from your Sqn Clk. But then as has been said above, savings are not what they once were.

Agree with all the above, almost everything could be bought cheaper in Vegas.

Regardless of the merits or otherwise of the BX shopping experience, it is generally straight forward getting in using a current MoD ID card (subject to security alerts etc.).

I would say no chance. It is now a really hard base to get on to. Last year I was there with work and applied for access which was only granted when we were driving to the base, we applied 6 weeks before. Because our Exercise had nothing to do with Nellis lots of questions were asked prior to us being granted permission.

Last time there was 2011 while temp working at Creech. Access required a NATO Travel order that specifically named Nellis AFB. A generic "USA" or "All Countries" was not good enough. They also wanted to know who I was visiting and where they worked. Having your son with you is likely to open a further level of interrogation.

As said above, its really not worth the effort.
