I'm surprised we've got this far without any mention of the Bf109.

Built for a single purpose, which it did very well.

We surely can't mention the Bf109 without calling to mind the Ju 87..
Its appearance in the skies over the Low Countries in the summer of 1940 must have terrified those underneath it.. with its stark bird of prey-like appearance and that unearthly wail.

Grand Slam Lancaster was a real F Off aircraft more so than the B29 which might be considered most beautiful.

I was at Tabuk in 1974 and we only ever saw one Frightening. That was where I found out not to try to attach the ladder until the static had been discharged. There was nothing much to do there so I worked in the MT yard for a while and then had a lucrative time watchkeeping in the diesel power station 12/7 The overtime pay was wonderful! Especially the last 4 hours on a Friday.... Triple time .....
