Nato risks a nuclear war with Russia within a year if it does not increase its defence capabilities in the Baltic states, one of the alliance's most senior retired generals has said.
General Sir Richard Shirreff, who served as Nato’s Deputy Supreme Allied Commander in Europe between 2011 and 2014, said that an attack on Estonia, Lithuania or Latvia – all Nato members – was a serious possibility and that the West should act now to avert “potential catastrophe”.
He has written a fictional book 2017: War with Russia, but told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme the events it describes were “entirely plausible”.

Well if you're doing it on-line, you better get it in, though don't expect a reply as there might just be a loud squeal on the line..

I won't bother weeding the garden then...
I don't own this space under my name. I should have leased it while I still could
Treadigraph, with you there, why do today what you don't have to do tomorrow.

Move to Hiroshima or Nagasaki then as lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place; or so it's said!

I remember hearing (probably apocryphal) of a chap in America in the thirties, who figured a war was inevitable. He studied all the variables of the various nations, and moved his family to what he calculated was the safest place. They moved to the Solomon Islands, or to be more specific, Guadalcanal.
Absolutely correct. He was a climatologist who reckoned the Falklands was one of the few places in the world that would not be covered by radioactive fall-out. Bit of bad luck really!

He was a Canadian, I went to school with his son who was called Jimmy Mc....... (yes I know it sounds like a Scottish name, but he was Canadian, honestly)
I heard General Shireff on the Today programme this morning and my reaction then was that as we've survived some 30 years since General Sir John Hackett's "Third World War," predicated for 1985, then hopefully all will be well over this new book. That said, I would not be surprised if President Putin comes up with some scheme to test the water once we have a new US President, but I'd like to think that his self-interest will prevent him from doing anything too silly.

Herod: I long ago heard a similar story but the chap was alleged to have moved to the Falkland Islands in the late 1970s to avoid the threat of nuclear war between USA & USSR.
