Nice to see the taxpayer is getting good value from Southern Q these days
a handy reminder for all those 'startled' viewers that the RAF are still operating.
Beggars belief that comms failures still occur in airliners these days - was under the impression that they had various means for communicating?

I don't own this space under my name. I should have leased it while I still could
Julie, one reason for comma failure is failing to enter the correct frequency on the box. Don't say this was the case.
Some heavy duty whingeing taking place on the mother-site. "Over-reaction" is the theme.
Makes I larf!
It really is remarkable that people who presumably want to be protected do not will the means of protection.

I didn't hear the boom but heard the aircraft overshoot at Newcastle.
Didn't seem long between me saying "Ooh that's military." To the wife and the story (or non story) appearing on the news sites.
Just a shame it was dark. The last RAF jets I saw here were F3s!

If Af 1558 landed at 2220hrs why was the Tanker flying a hold at 25000 feet off the coast until nearly midnight? (FR24.com playback on AF1558 then look for tanker.) Or were the Boys just taking advantage of geting some extra time in?
Good job anyway, todays af 1558 is over Kent now

So no answer on the frequency selected?
What do you do?
You go back to last-used frequency of course - not faff about long enough to cause alarm in present climate - then to make it worse - there were reports of aircraft not transponding?
Would like to have a quick look at maintenance/snag sheet prior to flight ;-)
Sounds like a severe case of 'poor airmanship'
And Yes, I am speculating as last time I looked this is still a 'rumour' network
;-)

Orion: I'd imagine that the Voyager on QRA standby is fuelled for a mission that might last several hours such that, if an Alert is all over quickly, there's a need to burn down to max landing weight. If that happens during the day, it may prove possible to divert a bit of trade in that direction to take advantage of the situation, though perhaps not at midnight.

Julie, indeed, but we don't know the flash to bang time. As I said, only one possibility, shouldn't happen but obviously could and did.
Yes, it could be poor airmanship, didn't I read that they had not responded to guard which does perhaps indicate system rather than human factors, I am sure we will find out.

Maybe not.

Although an Air France flight number, this flight is actually operated by our old friends from London City, CityJet, with an RJ85. Aircraft EI-RJC on the flight in question.
