RAF OLD CATTON History 1938 - 1945

RAF OLD CATTON

An acquaintance of mine is compiling a history of RAF Old Catton, near Norwich, so obscure that it is not listed amongst former RAF stations.

The detail he is interested in is from the time it was built 1938/39 until 1945.

So far he has information of the Coltishall Sector Ops Room moved there in 1940/41.
The USAF 2nd Bombardment Substitution Wing (Later 2nd Air Division) and the 14th Combat Bombardment Wing formed there in 1943 when the station was known as Camp Thomas AAF 108.
He really would like to confirm details of formations that were at old Catton during the period mentioned ie 1938-1945.
Information he has would indicate that:
From 1939 it was on a care and maintenance basis with only a Met Office there and possibly staffed
by RAF and civilians .
Subsequently No. 465 Searchlight Battery
No. 995 Balloon Squadron
No. 1 Balloon Flight and possibly
USAF HQ 987 Military Police (Aviation) were stationed there.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The remaining buildings are now used by headquarters Norfolk and Suffolk Wing ATC, and 231 (Norwich) Squadron ATC.

History of RAF Old Catton

Thank you for the response.

We were perhaps somewhat optimistic hoping someone who had served might respond but I suppose they would be in their 90's by now.
