Whilst it is true that the pin was never found, the winglock microswitch which was mounted on top of the pin was found in the impact crater!

A bit of thread creep now but there have been a few comments above on rolling under g. In the Bucc, the maximum g for any rolling manoeuvres was +4 and whether you could use full aileron or just half aileron depended on all up weight and whether you were below or above 0.85M respectively. The maximum bank angle change for loaded rolls such as these was 180 deg. Further details on request (and yes, I did have to get out the Aircrew Manual to get these numbers!).
