Well it should have been on the ground, but that didn't rhyme. Colt airfield is to become a solar farm

I wonder if the MoD would retain some of these sites for similar use, and harvest some revenue, instead of handing them over to county councils.
Some thought provoking visuals.

And the former airfield at Castle Combe - well the bit in the middle of the race track.
So with Wroughton, Castle Combe and various famer's fields, I never realised there was so much sun shine in Wiltshire

These new cells don't require sunlight. These farms are funded by quite esoteric and tax advantageous investments which are getting 'safer' as they become more established and as technology improves. Just last week, the US Department of Commerce 'revised' its anti-subsidy and anti-dumping tariffs with the Chinese that will result in a glut of these panels on the market. That will, in all likelihood, make them much cheaper throughout the EU (now that it has resolved its commercial solar differences with the Chinese).
Drove past today. Heavy plant at scottow runway 22 end, and plenty of
panels already installed. Bloke on site reckons another couple of months till completion. (If anyone "happens" to be flying over anytime...eyes out to see
if the runway stays there, please)

Dont forget the small solar farm they are building at Lyneham.
HERE’S the latest work going on at the former RAF Lyneham airbase as work continues to turn the site into a 83 hectare solar farm.
The farm, approved at the end of last year by Wiltshire Council, will take up an area greater than 100 football pitches when it is complete and consist of around 160,000 solar panels.
It will have the capacity to generate 40MW of power.

I wonder if the chap in charge will be called "Sunray"?
Edited to add.. and to think that we spent all of the cold war trying to stop a bucket of sunshine landing on these places.
