Just heard on the 6 o'clock news that the RAF has 'apologised' for the sonic boom. Why oh why did they apologise? I give up!

The RAF might have "regretted" any noise disturbance, but their statement made it pretty clear that it was necessary and authorised:

“Typhoon aircraft were launched this afternoon from RAF Coningsby to intercept a civilian aircraft south of London which was causing concern to air traffic control authorities.
“The aircraft was safely escorted to London Stansted.
“To fulfil their quick reaction role the Typhoons were cleared to travel at supersonic speed, any noise disturbance as a result of this is regretted. Essex police now have the lead.”
Curiously, according to media the Latvian civil aircraft belongs to a company named RAF-Avia!

I am surprised that the interceptor used his callsign rather than a simple "British Fighter." The latter would have made more impact on me if I had been sitting in the Antonov

Perhaps a permanent Olympic 2012 Tiffie QRA detatchment at Northolt should be considered - or take back Biggin Hill into RAF ownership

As the bard himself might have said "Much ado about nothing". Looks like it had a transponder failure, surely the Comms were operating because why else would a highly intelligent Typhoon operator transmit a threat ? It was transporting car parts to Brum, it appears, so, it's appearance over Britain shouldn't have been a surprise ? (Do they still get flight plan clearances) ? Finally, Sky seem to be unable to refer to this aircraft, without mentioning it's Russian manufacture, a point of absolutely no relevance. Good on the lads putting every effort to meeting mission requirements, but the whole presentation on national media shows a distinct lack of professionalism, and once again a disregard if reality when it comes to reporting fact.

Ref that Sky report, is there such a thing as a quiet sonic boom?

Good drills those who responded, and to those who keep the responders ready.

How did Sky News get access to that radio message so soon after the intercept, and presumably while the jets were still airborne? That's assuming the RT is from the same intercept.

"Much ado about nothing"
I disagree.

It doesn't come much more worrying than an "unresponsive" plane heading towards the center of the capital.

Is that an illegal intercept so that Sky is also guilty of an offence?

Was the person who listened to the RT a little foolish in recording it and then passing it to the press?

All very well threatening to shoot somebody down if they do as expected and obey the order - but what is the SOP if the reply is "go ahead - and you will be responsible for any casualties on the ground"?

I am not really expecting an official answer to that question - just considering possible scenarios.

Spare a thought for the Tiffie pilot - 'toughened' as we are/were, to be giving that ultimatum to a civilian target is significantly stressing. Good job by all.

Trim stab - to get that decision from the controlling authorities within the Typhoon's endurance is something. The answer to your question is 'fire' - part of the 'stress'.

Trim Stab, you seem to be reducing this event and your speculation to the lowest possible level. How could your imagined response to an order to comply affect a supposed engagement order?
