Congratulations to all, especially Lynn Johnson whom I recall from Binbrook Ops and as an IOT Student. ISTR she was variously Equerry to the D of E and Manager of RAFAT

Although not on the list, Lord Stirrup has also been promoted to (Honorary) MRAF by HM the Queen - I wonder where you get the rank tabs from (only out of pure curiosity )

Just watched the Queen's Birthday Parade and Flypast - tear to the eye here in rural France. However, surprised to hear that pilot of left hand Puma was a flying officer, so guess must be first tour, but still surprised we have "operational" flying officers - thought from the 80s odd everyone was at least a flt lt. BUT , well done him (or her -did not catch the name). A very good parade and flypast - thank you all.

I hadn't heard of this honorary five star thing before - have there been any others previously?

Re the rank tabs - I bet Moss Bros have got some lurking about in a drawer somewhere that they didnt think they'd ever shift!

Overall, it was a very good parade. Even though I'm not the biggest fans of that side of military life, I must admit that we do put on a good show when required to.

I did like the interviews they did where they explained how they put the flypast together catering for the different ac speeds, probably a very interesting insight if you are not intimately involved in that sort of thing. However, I did note that Nicholas Witchell described the E-3 as 'ISTAR transport'; was that a genuine mistake or a Freudian slip I wonder?

The only disappointing thing overall was that the flypast was over so quickly. I know we are busy around the various bazaars, to be down to 1 or 2 from most types, especially fast air and Chinook when we have relatively large numbers of those, has prompted a lot of comments on various social media channels along the lines of 'was that it?' and 'I guess that's most of the RAF up then?'. But I think that is more a reflection on the cuts than the sqns and crews. Or was Air Cmd trying to make a point again as I believe it did a few years ago with a real blink and you'll miss it fly past?

Seriously big rank tabs....

....brings to mind a tale told by a friend who moved to a new locale and was being sussed by the neighbours at little drinks parties (ie is he one of us?)

He is in his late 70s and one old biddy said (cue Lady Bracknell voice) "I hear you were in the Royal Air Force? What rank were you? My father was in the Royal Air Force too".

"I was a Wing Commander", he replied.

"Wing Commander? Wing Commander? Are you sure that's an RAF rank??"

"Certainly is. Are you sure your father was in the RAF?"

"Of course he was (abruptly) but all HIS friends ranks began with "Air" "

Daddy it turned out after some gentle quizzing turned to have taken over from Trenchard way back when.

Funny old world sometimes innit?

TTN ...

As far as I'm aware the last "Honorary" MRAF was HRH Prince Charles on the 16th June 2012 ... which I assume was a similar HMTQ Birthday appointment.

Also appointed ... Admiral Lord Boyce to the honorary rank of Admiral of the Fleet and Lord Walker to the honorary rank of Field Marshal

Sadly every year the flypast gets smaller and as A/C types disappear it will get smaller still. Best days are long gone.

"the E-3 as 'ISTAR transport'"

You can get quite a few cases of red inside an E-3D

I think Charles Guthrie got one recently as a Field Marshal. Quite nice to keep the old ranks in use to be honest - doesnt cost anything, but looks smart :-)

Sorry, but I disagree with the whole idea, another outmoded military award ceremony, simply earned off the backs of others and often at their detriment for simply for doing their jobs, with a token junior rank thrown in to make it look like it's not.
The same goes for the Civil side with much back patting amongst Company directors while the few token awards are thrown in for mrs X the postie with 39 years service... Those in athletics that get knighthoods for simply winning a race is a farce. Well that's my view, totally outmoded in the world we live in.
