UK Maritime Patrol Aircraft - An Urgent Requirement
With warship and submarine production that's pretty much what they're trying to do. The Type 26 frigate will follow on from the carriers (helped by adding three OPVs in between) and will be delivered at around 1 per year. In particular they're trying to achieve a seamless flow for submarines, with the Astutes being followed by the successor bombers followed by Astute replacement - the UK learned a very hard lesson from failing to do this before the Astutes came on stream.

@Royalistflyer
The government basically. Ideally yes there would be a military aircraft and ship building strategy based on delivering x number of aircraft/ships every y years, rolling on a contract of 30 years or so. The problem is politicians like to fiddle. We've also got the European issue in aircraft where they want everything done on a European basis, meaning we have to dance to someone else's tune.

A continuous stream doesn't have to mean buying more ships, though they'd probably be cheaper on this basis so we would probably end up with more.

"Australian government has just committed to a twenty years programme of continuous building for the Royal Australian Navy"
not much to do with the RAN and eveything to do with keeping shipbuilding going in Port Adelaide

I don't own this space under my name. I should have leased it while I still could
TA, like Prime for infrastructure, clear aims, contactor to maintain the good, improve the average, replace the poor and dispose of the unwanted. Long term contact, fixed plan, end of annularity.
After year 1, chunks cut from contract to save money, contractor shafted with intended stores and workers.

the Treasury HATES long term contracts as they really cut into the flexibility needed in balancing cash in and cash out neither of which they really can control.....................
Possible solution
BAE Systems anticipates increased interest in BAe 146M military transport - IHS Jane's 360
So, an airframe which we are familiar with. Just fit the clever kit from merlin and you have the solution.
Supplier has previous experience of adapting airframes for MP/ASW.
What could possibly go wrong ?

Transport: Does it have a large freight door somewhere? Or does it just carry small parcels?
MPA: And the weapons bay goes where?
Anyone got an Airfix kit they could modify, to show us how it would work out?

They did a little work with Lockheed on one version with a tail ramp, as well as pushing the side door version as a military airlifter.
Incidentally, isn't identifying the speaker as from BAE a breach of the Chatham House Rule?

A few of the sweetcorners back over in this green and pleasant/cold/wet land helping the USN find the local pubs at the moment (Joint Warrior) - safe flying to all. Watch out for the pointy things - they ain't used to sharing the skies with a mighty MPA these days!

there was a report drifting around a couple of days ago that our Russian friends are going to upgrade some of their SSN's - presumably because they can't build enough new ones fast enough
but this will mean taking current kit out of service for some time - I think the report said they might drop to 9 active nuclear subs - not sure if this was SSN only or SSN + SSBN
If it's both its about the same force as the RN...................

Fallon to Discuss Maritime Surveillance options, Including P-8 Acceleration, with Carter
WASHINGTON — UK Secretary of State for Defence Michael Fallon intends to discuss ways the US can help supply maritime surveillance capability until its P-8 aircraft come online – potentially including an acceleration of delivery for the Boeing made aircraft.
Asked whether the United Kingdom would be asking the Pentagon to provide some form of stopgap measure until the P-8s are available in order to deal with an influx of Russian submarine activity in Europe, Fallon said that will be an issue brought up during his Friday meeting with US Defense Secretary Ash Carter.
"Yes there will be discussions, and I hope they will be this afternoon, because we need it," Fallon said, specifically citing the "increase in Russian submarine activity" during the past year.
Fallon's comments came at an event hosted by the Atlantic Council, during which he also pledged that the UK is "stepping up" international operations, both specifically in joining the fight against ISIS in Syria and generally worldwide.
The UK announced the decision to buy nine P-8 aircraft in its Strategic Defense and Security Review, with the first three planes expected to come online in 2020. However, analysts have warned that leaves a gap in British capabilities, one emphasized by Russia's actions.
Sources have previously told Defense News that the two governments are looking at having two US Navy P-8s, with British crews available, operate from the UK in order to bridge the gap between now and when the first P-8s come online.........

The sooner we get ac here the better. There are significant issues that need to be de-risked.
What is still not clear is what what version of P8 we are getting. From the DOD documents I have read on the Web an acceptable version would be Block 3 with UK acoustics, sonobuoys and weapons. Also support for the ESM would be nice. Anything less will fall short of what may be required.

PT - Good luck with that. Unless such an end-point has been agreed already, the price to incorporate major UK systems will be set at deterrent levels. Even so, the money-folks will not like the projected cost of future upgrades on a custom configuration.

Hey Phoney, UK acoustics????
The Nimrod 2 had Canadian acoustics from CDC for the last 10 years in service,
The last UK acoustic set was either by Marconi or Ferranti I think, maybe we could give them a call, Oh! they've gone.
I do think having the MAD set (a la Indian version) would be nice, but I don't know how tactically necessary it is these days.

Ultra do a fine line in acoustic systems.
Mad may be a good idea.
There are many great UK sensor providers who now are forced to sell overseas due to HMG desire to buy US COTS/GOTS.

I'll bet the MoD had to offer up their First Born to the Treasury to get any MPA and teh budget for this one is already FIXED
Eventually we'll get upgrades but I really doubt there will be any cash for much national kit
