Best: Goose Bay: captive audience living it to the full.

Worst: Leeming: remote, characterless and full of disinterested SNCOs from the NE on last tours.

My best memories of the RAF were during training at RAF Topcliffe, then first squadron at Kinloss followed by 3 years at Lyneham Herc Sim. Second squadron 8 AEW at Lossiemouth followed by a great 3 years on a punishment posting to Spadeadam as the EWO. Another tour at Lyneham before final 2 1/2 years on 360 at Wyton.

Worst memory final pay slip after leaving the RAF. 24 great years where you took the rough with the smooth.

Best for me was NFTC in RCAF Cold Lake. Amazing mix of folk and our student houses!

Yet to have a shocker but not counting my chickens yet!

Port Harcourt??? What in Hell's name were you doing in Port Harcourt? I speak/write as someone who joined Marconi after leaving the RAF in 1959 (yes, I'm getting on a bit) and was sent to Warri in the Niger Delta. What a bloody awful place. Mind you, Nicosia Transit was probably worse whenever we went through ferrying and flying 47 and 53 Sqdn Beverleys. See - I said I was getting on a bit.

Best has got to be Akrotiri in the late 60s. Pity I was young and stupid and did not appreciate it enough.

Worst? Difficult to say as they were all great in their own way.

Best? Sunny Scampton in the late 1970s.

Second best? Chivenor when Blunty (aka sharpend) was there! How's the book going?

Worst? 237 OCU at Honington as a student Buccaneer pilot, without a shadow of a doubt.

Beagle I have now written 101 pages and 97,000 words. Trouble is I'm too busy flying and dreaming up more war stories

But I agree with you, Chivenor was Tops, but spoilt only by a rather unsupportive partner.

from an RAF attached Metperson's viewpoint:

Best Guetersloh, with Nicosia 1961-64 close behind.

Worst [which I avoided by the skin of my teeth] was Ocean Weather Ships, converted corvettes, scarcely seaworthy, manned by reprobates and piss-artists, very little work to do, food dreadful etc.
One only had to meet the weather ship people to realise what pondlife they were. I was posted so played every card I had. Fortunately I was PA and gopher to a very senior officer who discovered that he could not afford to lose me to the ocean deep.

Phewww!

Agree on best and worst postings though as per post 15.
