Argentina may be in a position to field advanced Chinese air-to-air and anti-ship weaponry if talks regarding the potential co-production of the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) FC-1/JF-17 multirole combat aircraft come to fruition.
Speaking at the Paris Air Show in mid-June, officials from Fabrica Argentina de Aviones (FAdeA) toldIHS Jane's that the company has had multiple discussions with Chinese officials over co-producing the fighter in Argentina. Although the FC-1/JF-17 is already jointly built with Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, FAdeA officials stressed that they are dealing solely with the Chinese in this matter.
While discussions are said to be far from over, if realised they will open up a wide panoply of Chinese weapon systems to Argentina that include the 100 km-range Luoyang SD-10A (PL-12) active radar-guided beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missile (AAM) and the very high speed CASIC CM-400AKG anti-ship missile, which has a range of 180-250 km...

Could be saber rattling, so they are seen to be doing something.

Treasury wise, they haven't got a pot to piss in. Unless the Chinese want to geschenk the hardware for their own political reasons, I find it hard to believe the FAA will be sporting new aircraft and missiles anytime soon.

I don't think it's a matter of barter, as the Chinese and Argentinians are already cooperating on the joint development and manufacture of the CZ-11 light helicopter, and this would further strengthen these ties.

Also, China has long supported Argentine claims to the Falklands as it sees parallels with Taiwan (which ties in with Roadster's notion of them "geschenking" the hardware to Argentina).

I've seen dozens of reports about argentina getting the latest wonder weapon.
Where they fall down is the total inability of the argentinean govt to acquire, train, support and operate any such force.
For those who worry, remember that the argentine navy has sufficient funding this year for about 135 sea days for its entire navy. A single rn escort spends more time at sea each year than their entire navy.
No disrespect to their military, and i've had the genuine pleasure of meeting some of their officers, but the task of turning their armed forces into sonething capable of threatening the falklands is going to take decades

China usually expects the barter to be in the form of the award of large infrastructure construction or mineral rights projects to Chinese companies. The provision of subsidised weapon systems is a sort of bribe to win these contracts which are often many times more lucrative.

Ironically, often the money for these infrastructure projects comes from western donor agencies!
