I didn't think that we named our warships after politicians. There are good reasons for this. Of course there is one obvious exception, and I think that is enough.

HMS Handbag.

Nobody would ever dare take her on, imagine if - like so many male politicians - you lost to something named that!

Apart from a minor aberration with a SSN, it's not our 400+ year tradition to name warships after prime ministers. Of course, there was a time when we left it to Johnny Foreigner to name airports after people.

A few years back I suggested that one of the forthcomming carriers should be named the King George VI instead of the Prince of Wales. The intention being to honour the late king who took the country through the second world war. Suitable vessel and within the naming tradition of the navy. Got a nice reply to my letter from Buck house but no joy.

The 'Yanks' also have a USS Winston Churchill in their ORBAT. Maybe, they will honour (or even honor for our American readers) the Iron Lady?

No reason at all why a ship should not be named after her.

Many historical figures have had ships named after them and sadly the good lady is now a historical figure. I would suggest that as long as ships are not named for living politicians
there is not an issue. I have to admit politicians are notable by their absense in any quantity.

I was rather taken by the Black Joke now there is a name for a ship.

Byron
Caesar
Numerous admirals
numerous generals
French generals who fought against us!!!! Marshals Ney and Soult
Cromwell
James Watt
Adam and Eve
The Duke of Wellington (who was prime minister) who also has the Iron Duke named after him.
There has been a Margaret but not a Thatcher.

The Iron Lady is not actually a bad idea.
