Tracing a Service Record

Can anyone give me a pointer as to how to go about tracing an outline service history?

A friend of the family has very recently died and his relatives would like to know (I think urgently) where he was stationed during his air force career.

I'm guessing somewhere in Innsworth there's a dusty file, but who has the cupboard key?

TNA Records

The National Archives (TNA) holds RAF service personnel records up to the early 1920's, although I believe the intention is to move records up to and including WW2 service there in the near future - it may already be in progress. More recent records are accessed via the disclosures team at Cranwell

A friend of mine has tried to obtain his fathers Army records but they will only release them to the closest living next of kin, an older brother, who has no interest in them consequently he cannot access the records.

Basic records may be issued to non-NOK. As far as a disinterested NOK, all you need to do is persuade them to sign the request form. You would pay any fee and can even put your address on the request.

In 2009 I obtained my late Father's RAF Service Record from RAF Disclosures, address below. You can also obtain details of any medals awarded, again address below. If service is after 1923 then the records can only be released to next of kin, or his/her nominee with their written consent. From memory I think the cost is £30. Best of luck.

Anyone got a good address/contact to obtain an Army record.

I have my Grandad's WWII Army medals (Sapper in Italy/N Africa), but no idea of locations/units etc.

I've found the Veterans Agency to be very helpful. Or you might try the Royal Engineers at Chatham Barracks.
