No 1 tropical uniform and a beret?
A recent photo in the press shows Prince Harry in number one tropical white tunic, in Jamaca, presumably army, and a blue army air corp beret. Surely this is incorrect in number ones, shouldn't he be wearing a peak officers hat or do the army do things differently?
From memory, the RAF always did number 1 tropical uniform with peak hat, and a photo of Prince Charles in Ghana in 1977 shows him in tropical number ones, Royal Navy, with peak hat.
Can someone enlighten us on this?

Never mind discussing the niceties of Army uniforms, one's Prince Recognition could do with some brushing up. Or has William defected to the AAC and covertly joined his brother in the Caribbean?
Not sure I have ever seen anyone in the SAS or Parachute Regiment wearing anything other than a beret either, come to think of it.

Ray,
You beat me too it! 0/10 for Prince recce.....abit shocking really! You are also correct about the Parachute Regt, SAS.....both of which fell under the AAC during WW2 which might explain why none of them wear SD type hats with No1 dress. I believe you can also add the RM to that list.

Err, no you can't - Dress uniform includes a white Wolseley pattern pith helmet for all ranks, whilst on other occasions white-topped SD type caps/hats with a red band are worn by officers and warrant officers, with a similar, somewhat simpler, cap/hat worn by all other ranks.

I stand corrected with regard to the RM SD hat!
No worries - unless you have to pay for a new one ....
I always thought the RM were too keen to display their green lids!
Quite right too!

I think the Royal Tank Regiment also only wear berets. Incidentally I think the pongoes have another name for what we RAF types call the SD cap but not sure what it is. Also seen on ebay the US term "visor cap" creeping in when describing British military head-dress, but I am sure that is unofficial

Anyone in green who wears a cap with No 1's is politely referred to as a 'crap-hat'

Quote from wikipedia regarding No 1 dress
'The peaked cap is not worn by all regiments; berets are worn in lieu by the Royal Tank Regiment, Army Air Corps, Parachute Regiment, Special Air Service and Intelligence Corps' as I said it is from wikipedia so take it as you will but it is purporting to quote from
'British Army Dress Committee (August 2005). Joint Service Publication 336: The Defence Supply Chain Manual. Vol. 12, Part 3, Pamphlet 15 (3rd edition ed.). p. Annex A.

You can also add the RLC to the list of strange hat wearing. All commissioned officers and WO1's can wear the SD and No.1 hat. WO2's can wear the No.1 hat, and all other ranks have a beret, whether in FAD, (the replacement for No.2's), or No.1's. Note that you will still see drill pigs and others wearing the No.1 hat and poking two fingers up at the RLC dress committee. The Director RLC also decided a couple of years ago that the RLC should not wear a stable belt at any time, after 'persuading' everyone to buy one. Which will probably change when a new Director is appointed.

FAD looks like a cross between 'pound store' wear and something from WW1 IMHO.
The belt is hideous and looks like the cheap tack the RAF have on their jackets.
I always felt very smart in 1's/2's with a lovely white plastic belt and chrome buckle.
I wonder how smart I could feel with a length of wooly belt tied round my waist

Harry is a Captain in the Blues & Royals (RHG/D). If he were not attached to the AAC, he'd be wearing the hat below, but he is, so he isn't.
HRH Colonel the Duke of Cambridge looks splendid in his IG uniform though!

Re Lt Col Pople - shame he missed out on that job as a doorman on a New york apartment block, particularly as he'd already bought the hat.
Roadster - we did all that last year
(nice wings though)
