Vulcan Aircrews
All the former Offutt AFB museum exhibits have now been relocated to the purpose-built Strategic Air and Space Museum at Ashkand, NE some 30 miles from Offutt. All the old relics are now safely indoors.
One wonders whether some of the old Bellevue Ramada relics have been treated quite so well....

Further to correct my last, I now believe it might have been a staged illusional image - sorry; Stemmed from the US Giant Voice crews perception of the Vulcan as a fighter. Nevertheless, I'll see if I can chase down bro's phot.
I don't own this space under my name. I should have leased it while I still could
I remember one film of the B36. Also how one had flown from USA to Libya to bomb at Tarhuna range and then do on to Germany. Europe was out so he went home again. Yes, a true intercontinental bomber. Imagine if they had actually completed it during WW2.

Should be at Newark, possible clash of dates, present a/c is Evector Eurostar, co-built with Andy Godber, sold the Europa after 5 years of flying fun, preceeded by 3 yrs of hard labour! Promised photo should be up tomorrow, I still need a clever nav or AEO,and there were plenty of those. I was and still am a purely pull back go up cor blimey bloke! Jon Tye
Ah yes, Sir Fred's beast with Consolidated finest
I may have to challenge you to a duel at Newark on 28 April for that insult to an elegant lady. Suitable weapons would be nav rulers!

I still remember with annoyance when I went to stores at Hullavington as my nav rule had a chip in it. I was falsely accused by the WO, who ran the stores, of fencing and I had done no such thing.
On my first visit to Offut, in 1962, I was assured that the B36, though not flown, was fully servicable and had a war target. It was one of the conditions laid by General Le May when approved of the preservation of the aircraft.
"There are no free lunches in SAC."
Presumably if WW III broke out it would be fully fuelled and armed, a collection of generals and colonels would climb in and blunder off across the Pacific. By the time they reached anywhere all the flashes and bangs would have finished so they would have ended up in Outer Mongolia with a load of Vulcan aircrew.
Looking back I think it was a pack of lies.

FED, I would nt put it past them. When I went into the command post in '65 everyone in their was armed with a pistol except the two guys with the launch codes. If they had tried an illegal launch . . .

I remember Tony well, flying with a hand and wrist in a plaster. Another time (could be same time) he asked the flt cdr for a flt as he needed it for currency. For some reason it was refused and when he appealed he was rebuffed even more.
He went to the bar for a pint.
Flt Cdr dug him out and told him he was on the flypro. He refused to fly as he had been drinking.
Flt Cdr threatened to have him courts martialled. Don't know the final outcome.
Good bloke, well missed.

Hi Jon,
Talking about photographs...... do you have any of the Queen's Birthday Flypast with the 4 Vulcans as the backbone? Despite all the flights I did ( rehearsals and "on the day") I never had a photo as a memento! (Maybe I was never lined up!)
You must remember when we almost collided thanks to the twerp from 230 OCU!!!!!!!!!!! I can recall your phone call as if it were yesterday - but I cannot remember what you said exactly.

Hi Simmy, How well I recall that day. I've never seen a vulcan so close even when standing underneath one. I don't recall the phone conversation but I doubt it's repeatable. If you're still QFI'ing keep safe. Jon

G-OTYE with XM655 at Wellesbourne Mountford
I'm glad to report that Jon took me up on my offer to fly in to Wings & Wheels at Wellesbourne on 17 June and park his aircraft next to XM655, a Vulcan that he flew on several occasions back in the day.
Later on, Jon and a record breaking number of spectators watched as '655, crewed by David Thomas, Mike Pollitt, John Laycock and Barry Masefield did this:
Six wheels in the air (just briefly)!
Lots of other former Vulcan aircrew around that day, including BEagle!
Thanks to everyone coming along and making Wings & Wheels a great day - the money raised means that we can carry on keeping '655 alive.....

If you are a fan of the "Aloominum Overcast", make a pilgrimage to the Wright-Patterson Air Force Museum in Dayton, beautiful example there along with the largest collection of aircraft you will ever see in one place. A place you must visit, and give it two days to come close to seeing everything.
