Sqn Ldr Gaylon Horning, RIP

For those in the Phantom community, I'm sad to say that Gay Horning passed away on 10 June 2011 at the grand old age of 81.

Gay was a stalwart of the Phantom Force both in his days as an instructor on 228 OCU and as a simulator instructor in his later years. I for one learned a lot from his wise words and the world is a sadder place for the loss of another of life's Gentlemen.

RIP

Not just known to the F4 community. Gay was a sim instructor at Coningsby during the early to mid 90s in the F3 sim - a real gent as I remember him too Alongside Gordon Allen, Peter Perry and Rick Groombridge.

RIP Gay, old chap. I hope to reach your grand old age someday and I raise my glass to you, Sir.

My experience of Gay was also from the Coningsby F3 Sim. A delightful chap; happy memories.

A sad loss indeed. Gay was a warm and friendly man, a true gentleman. He was also a fine instructor. RIP.

Oh, the inscruitable face of Gay as he observed our poker school from the top bunk during an Arctic Express in Andoya - then the later participation to all our costs.

Never a glum face - always some pearl of wisdom not far from his lips. A member of No 1 Phantom course and a founder member of 6 as we reformed with Phantoms.

Happy days. A friend and a real stalwart in difficult times.

RIP Gay

A wonderful touch at the funeral today. The Order of Service showed a picture of Gay dressed to go flying. It would be the way he wanted to be remembered. Our thoughts with June and the family.

I'll raise a glass this evening.

Sad news. I remember him from the F4 OCU - professional, courteous, and sage (unlike some of his more ego-driven colleagues!), he was easy to learn from. As others have pointed out, he was also a gent of the first order. I shall raise a glass to him at the earliest opportunity.

I arrived on 228OCU in May 1982, some may remember a slight skirmish going on down south. I worked alongside Gay on both F4 sims M1 and M2.

Gay was an absoulute gentleman both in and out of uniform, even when we were out shopping in CGY or Tattershal he always took the time to spend the time talking with my family.
He was one of the worlds best....
And I was just a humble Techie, who maintained the F4 Sims

Sad news indeed! Gay was a real gentleman and he saw many many pilots and navigators on the road to their careers. I only have good memories of my time on 229 OCU.

Thanks

June and family would like to thank everyone who came to The Celebration of Gaylonís Life at Holy Trinity Church Tattershall. Thanks also to the many friends who sent letters and cards to the family, also to all who have paid tribute to Gaylon on the Professional Pilots Rumour Network website (PPRuNe). Thanks also to Canon John Moore for his support and his tributes to Gaylon.
A memorable Service.
