Fanatic
Concise Oxford Dictionary (Fifth Edition) definition:
(Person) filled with excessive & mistaken enthusiasm.
The on-line thesaurus offers us a definition attributed to Winston Churchill:
"A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject"--Winston Churchill

This thread IS about axeing the Harrier- just look at the thread title! The fact that some people have broadened it to the wider review is hardly the thread starter's fault.
WEBF has taken over a large part of the thread because he cannot de-couple Harrier and Carrier. The Harrier did so much more than simply provide carrier air-power but he cannot write one without then banging on for pages about how Admirals and retired Admirals are shocked at the loss of the carriers.
The harriers could have existed quite happily without the carriers, the reverse is quite obviously not true.

Ahh - the Lee Enfield Number 4 Rifle with Parker-Hale match sights. Hot Summer days on the Dartmoor ranges on the 200 and 500 yard targets. And Bisley for the Ashburton Shield every Summer Hol!
Bliss!

exMudmover,
Yes, falling plate competitions where some b&s&$d has reversed the gas plug in your SLR, so you can only fire single shots.
All followed by that really sweet tea, made with condensed milk.

...and it does have that "sexy" feature so loved of modern weapon systems - stealth!

The Harrier could not have continued in Service from the moment the Coalition Partners looked at the books following the last General Election. The 2 new Carriers could not be cancelled because of the constraints of the Contracts signed by the outgoing Administration which would have cost more to cancel than it would have to build. The financial "Black Hole" in the Defence Budget which the Incoming Administration had to address will haunt the UK Armed Forces for years to come.
PS
Which rifle do you prefer?

I believe you will have to get WEBF's approval for a Pink Tutu - RAF Blue ones are acceptable.
PS I suggest that you do not start your request with the phrase "Hello Sailor".

caz - pay attention!!
WEBF would surely only accept a Dark Blue tutu.
And high heels????? Surely not!! They might catch on the staircase of the boat.
Or ladder of the ship.
Or whatever!!

My sincere apologies - they're stairwells!
BBC News - Queen Elizabeth Rosyth carrier fire put out
If that is what the BBC calls them, then that is what they must be!

And did any alternatives to just answer A or answer B get considered?

Here is a quote from a naval general training booklet (for new recruits) from several years ago - emphasising the unique dangers of shipborne aviation, and the whole ship aspects.
Flight Safety relies on everyone in the Royal Navy, from the First Sea Lord downwards, working as a team. As an important member of this team it is vital that you understand the role you play in maintaining the highest possible standards. Your attitude towards Flight Safety can make the difference between whether people live or die!
Naval aviation is an inherently dangerous business, but the whole ship's company working together can minimise the degree of danger.....
Of course, embarking Harrier does not involve "cats 'n traps", which makes some of the following comments rather pointless with respect to the current situation. Unless the current decade has been bypassed, and we are suddenly in the 2020s.... No, didn't think so!

I think that you should "Proof Read" your posts before transmission.
A question or two for YOU.
"How many CURRENTLY Carrier Qualified Fast Jet Pilots do the RN have?"
"How many Deck Landing "cat and trap" Instructors are there?"
"Are the SAR arrangements in place to provide cover for Fixed Wing Aircraft Carriers in far off Theatres of Operation ?"
"How many Tanker Aircraft will the RN deploy to extend the range of the limited number of aircraft capable of operating from the 2 planned Aircraft Carriers?
