NDW - the only way to find out is to carry on the process at the AFCO and when they give you your form to be filled out at your local optician, hand it in ASAP to the AFCO, they'll send it to cranwell and you'll know in a week or so.

George

I know you are young but if you want to be a pilot in the RAF you will have to present yourself in the best possible light. Modern youth has a tendency to be inaccurate when texting - this is not a trait which will stand you in good stead if you want to be a pilot.

A little time with a spell checker would produce the following:-

Apply to get the definitive from the doctors on your particular case, particularly if it was believed to be misdiagnosis at a young age. Do not rely on the careers office staffers alone.

"received"
i before e except after c - whats the problem?
His grammar suggests to me he will become a doctor or an Air Marshall
Thankfully, he will not be doing my medicals or writing my reports!

George, Forget the answer to your question which refer only to grammar (You will get that alot on here). Basically if you have had a history of asthma as a child it can write you off as potential aircrew within the Royal Air Force, However there are certain exceptions to that rule - Only within the case of a mis-diagnosis from a doctor.

Your best option is to ask relevant questions to your GP, And obtain enough information to go to the AFCO in person and ask questions that can accurately give you the information you need.

Dont worry to much about the stick you get for Grammar etc... On this forum, Take it as an introduction to Banter - And to learning to avoid certain people in life

All the best mate with whatever career path you follow.

George, you need to research whether or not it is possible to 'grow out' of asthma. If it isn't, then it wasn't - if you take my meaning. Up to the age of about 8 I had breathing difficulties (wheezing, tight chest and so on) which were diagnosed as asthma but subsequently were found to be caused by an allergy. This problem was fixed by a course of (de-sensitising?) injections. The medical people had no problems with this backround when I joined as a pilot in 1963.
You probably realise by now that officialdom finds it easier to say "no" than to expend time and effort to see if a "yes" is possible. So the effort has got to come from you. Start by asking your GP to refer you to a specialist who not only has expertise in the field, but also has some clout in aviation medical circles. When you're sure of your facts and (hopefully) have a clean bill of health, apply again .... and this time don't take no for an answer.
Good luck

If it happened before you were 5 and never recurred - AND you can cope with hard physical excercise then you may well be OK but any evidence of wheezing in later life would be a problem. Good luck

Ho Ho - I just love that NCA humour which uses the English language at its best.

The poor chap hasn't got a chance of being a pilot if his post is an example of how he communicates. The trouble nowadays it is not PC to criticise/correct anybody and if you do you get M*R*Ns making puerile comments.

I am sure you wouldn't want the pilot flying you to be someone who always accepts second best!

buoy 15 - you will notice he edited his post after mine!!

Hi all, I'm in the same kind of position as that shown above.
Im 15, and just starting my second year of GCSEs. After having my heart set on being an RAF pilot since I can remember, I've found out that any history or Asthma will exclude you completely. However, although it is on my medical notes as asthma, my parents are sure that it was not, but just an allergy. The last time it troubled me was when I was about 4 - and when I (hopefully) come to join up after Uni, I will have been clear of the (supposed) asthma for 20 years.

Have I got a chance of becoming aircrew?

Regards,

Ben

Ben,

Are your parents doctors? Speak to your GP and let him/her diagnose you.

That's true, but say it was an allergy, and not asthma, what could I do?
Even though I dodnt actually have asthma, would what my GP said 20 years ago be the final word for the RAF Doctors?

Thanks,

Ben

Well, if you don't have asthma then I would assume that your doctor isn't going to tell the RAF that you do infact have asthma!

I'm in a similar situation to you. I want to join as a pilot as well, though I've finished college now so I'm a few years older than you. When I was at school a teacher became concerned that I was out of breath after running long distance. My mum took me to see the doctor, he gave me an inhaler and I never used it. When I spoke with my GP not long ago, he told me that I had never actually been diagnosed as suffering from asthma.
So I assume (hope) that is what the RAF doctors will be told - that I don't have asthma.

As I said though, speak to your GP to be sure. That's what I'm going to do.

Royal Navy 'Sift'

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me...

I passed AIB back in March (for Pilot) yet have not been offered an entry in the previous two Dartmouth intakes.

Has anyone, or does anyone know of cases in which people have passed for aircrew and not been selected in their waiting period? I just wanted to know if this is a common occurance really. I am hopefull for the January or febuary as last year they didn't meet their requirement for Pilots for these intakes.

Cheers, Blimy

Blimy - time for a call to the ACLO or direct to AIB I think. Pilots (did you pass both P and O under the old system pre 01 Nov 06?) are particularly needed, I understand.
