Do you have to go to private school not to ask bone questions in the main section of the mil forum?

There is a thread for newbs that will answer all your sensible questions...

No, you dont have to go to private school, I thought that was pretty obvious. I would say that it doesnt particularly help, as long as you have the same motivation as anyone else that wants to do the job and you are good enough, then you will get in. The biggest aspect I found they were interested in was how keen you were; it will take you a long way.

Well of course you do old chap, I note you don't have a two word hyphened name, unless you are hiding it......just checking, you little son of a gun what!, Jolly good old chap!. You do, of course, get your tailoring done in St. James, have a private income and enjoy polo.

See you in the Sub Continent, don't forget to have your man pack a pith helmet.

If you go/went to an expensive private school you basically don't have to do the interviews at OASC, as they are desperate for a bit of class in the RAF these days.

If your Mum is called Elizabeth and lives in a big place/palace then you just get made Wing Cdr on day one, and go up from there.

Use it as a rule!

"Most aircrew have got twelve inches, but don't use it as a rule"

AA,
Funny you should say that, a Nav once told me that he had an extremely long one, but that it had a strange sort of scale on it.

There is absolutely no requirement to have attended public school before joining the RAF.

In fact most public school careers masters will try to persuade you to follow another career path - they view the RAF as being frightfully common and plagued with loutish grammar school oiks. Or, even worse, those who have been to a 'comprehensive school', whatever that might be.

If you have been fortunate enough to have been educated at a public school, you will find that during basic training you will be viewed with jealousy disguised as mockery by those oiks who speak with pronounced regional dialects - and who " 'av 'us dinner before 'us tea".

OK - not serious. The RAF is more interested in what you have to offer than what your background happens to be. Don't sweat on it!

RAF...Degree?

Hi all,

I have been looking around sites and they say you do not need degrees to join the Air Force as a pilot.

Does having one, enhance prospects or nopt matter that much. I have been talking to some piolots who say they don't and I don't need one but someone else said that most pilots do.

Any Posts woul be gratefully received...

Dave

Helpfull if u have an understanding of the 360 degrees otherwise flying may become ......tiresome?

On a serious note the people to speak to are your local AFCO. They will have the latest up to date gen.
Suffice to say, I knew of 3/4 young pilot types on my IOT that were 19 and only had 'A' levels. I guess they like to catch 'em young before any alcoholic damage from Uni and the UASs' clouds your judgement??

RAF with a PPL

I am about to start my PPL, just wondering if having a PPL is going to effect me joining the RAF as a pilot.

I had a flying scholarship from the RAF, got my PPL, and realised the way forward was Dark Blue. Confirmed when we spent six months at Leeming on EFTS....

Amazing how quickly the SAS zero in on the length of aircrew bits.
Getting "firmly" back on thread however, I was anthropometrically measured during my time at Marham, on 45(R) Sqn, in 1984.
As the ex-hooligan states, there are limits but, these were usually discarded because of the need to wear all the attendant AEA required for winter/cold weather operations (North sea, Atlantic crossing or the Goose).
In other words, when the Doc told me, in 1984 , that I was too tall to possibly fly in the boot of a Tornado GR1, he was judging that on the fact that at 6ft 4" tall + winter AEA I would struggle to eject safely if required. This was considered to be especially true in a "trainer" or "two sticker" when the foot rests became rudder bars which sat much closer to the seat than the normal. Nonesense" say's I; we eventually agreed to differ and I continued on with the course.
I never ejected as it turned out but, I feel sure that if I had to, my back and knees would have been completely shagged and I would have struggled to walk again.
Strangely enough I was crewed with two stick monkey's who were also over 6ft 3" but they seemingly had no problems.
