I have never been a fan of the the Nimrod MR4 and can understand the logic that having a fleet of 9 aircraft which no other countries operates would be a huge financial burden.
The fact that smaller countries such as New Zealand and Portugal etc. which have like the UK huge Economic Exclusion Zones (EEZ) are prepared to operate maritime patrol aircraft makes me wonder that the UK has made a huge mistake. Even Italy which like many other countries is financial crisis is replacing their Atlantic a/c with ATR72 maritime patrol aircraft so they have some capability.
With a large nuclear submarine fleet to protect, a huge EEZ to Police and protect, SAR responsibilities etc. the UK will regret the decisions made in this defence review.

Yes it will,
but what's really annoying is that when somebody bites the bullet and orders something to fill the gap, there'll be a huge amount of political bunfighting until we manage to turn a Tiger Moth into the world's most expensive MPA... surely to goodness BWOS won't get the contract?

(Of course the other option is to buy a furriner aircraft, but then we'll insist on putting RR engines in....)

I understand MoD have cut back on the clearance divers' budget this year, they're still being provided with lead boots but will have to wait to FY 2012/13 for the breathing apparatus.... whilst all light infantry companies will have their GPMGs replaced with a new hyper velocity death cannon in 5.56mm, new weponry issue 2012, bullets in 2015....

Dave

(Yes, I'm just making this all up - but as MoD seem to do that all the time I figured it's my turn)

Utopia, at least here. Thread drift but The Wash wind turbine scheme was launched and an environmental study to lay the cables under the sea bed and then burrow under a bombing range that has been active for 85 years (and is still active) was conducted.

It went to planning and was eventually handed off to the engineers to implement. WHAT?

They had not been consulted at any stage and the whole thing had been done by the environmental scientists.

Torygraph: BAE Systems to cut 1,300 jobs following Government's defence review

BAE Systems, the defence group, will on Thursday announce that it is cutting around 1,300 jobs in the UK as a direct result of the Government’s recent defence review.

The job losses will be spread across a number of sites where the Nimrod spy planes and Harrier jets were assembled. Both aircraft were scrapped as part of the Government’s Strategic Defence and Security Review in the autumn.

In October the Government announced that the UK’s defence budget was to be cut by 8pc over the next four years. The move prompted experts to warn that the UK defence industry faces a “long period of continuous pressure”.

A spokesman for BAE would not comment on the cuts. However, he said: “We continually review activities across all our businesses as part of our normal business planning process and reviewing the impact of the SDSR is no different. If these reviews raise any issues that directly affect our employees then our policy is to communicate with our employees through our normal channels.” ....

The axing of Nimrod planes is set to save £3.6bn!!!

BBC News - BAE Systems plans 1,400 UK job cuts

Yet again the BBC get it wrong - the £3.6 billion is spent, we are throwing it down the drain.

Look under the picture

It says "The axing of Nimrod planes is set to save £3.6bn"

Wrong!

Email the BBC to put them right - they do have a tendancy to correct articles if experts comment.

In the other linked article on that page: BAE Woodford Nimrod plant to 'close early'

.....The company is also expected to confirm it will start to dismantle the Nimrod planes before the end of the year.

A union spokesman said this would represent "the world's most expensive pile of scrap metal".........

As Doptrack pointed out it was under the MRA4 picture; however, the BBC has changed it now.

And still they get it wrong!

If only 2 were built are they referring to PA4 and PA5. What happened to PA 1, 2 and 3?

I thought BAE were always going to close the Woodford site, with a resultant loss of jobs, once all the MRA4s had all been built - that is why all the BAE support for the MRA4 was based at Warton.

I thought BAE were already in an indecent haste to sell off Woodford as a housing development site, especially considering it is in a relatively up market area of outer Manchester!

Edited for clarity!

Yes - but there is a difference between a managed withdrawal and selloff on the back of ongoing contracts versus a unexpected cliff-edge in funding!

Whilst I appreciate (at least I hope I do) the impact on individuals, the point I was trying to make was that in terms of the graphic headlines of "JOB LOSSES AT BAE DUE TO SDSR" etc, some (i.e. the Woodford jobs) of those jobs would have been lost anyway fairly soon - all that has changed as a result of the SDSR is the timing..

Some of the "managed withdraw" at Woodford had also already started...

None of which takes away the impact of unexpected BAE job losses within the MRA4 (Warton) and Harrier support worlds. I was merely trying to offer some perspective to the headlines...

Biggus,

The breakdown of locations in today's announcement shows no ADDITIONAL impact on Woodford....

F3sR...

Ooops, that'll teach me to read the fine print, I'm having a bit of a bad hair day.

Still, given that the text in ORACs comment, copied directly from one article, said ...

The job losses will be spread across a number of sites where the Nimrod spy planes and Harrier jets were assembled

..and the link to a webpage in his later comment was entitled....

BAE Woodford Nimrod plant to 'close early'

I consider that it was not unreasonable for me to assume that some of the job losses mentioned (in terms of the numbers quoted) were due to the closure of Woodford...

First rule of maritime, never check - assume!!

The farce that is Nimrod gets worse.

Nimrod XV235 - Road Move to Cosford
The MOD is inviting expressions of interest from companies able to undertake the road move of XV235 from Kinloss to Cosford. Timescales are:

14 Jan 2011 - Deadline for Expressions of Interest.

6 May 2011 - Issue of Invitation to Tender.

31 Jul 2011 - Proposed completion of contract.

A pre-tender presentation will be held at Kinloss and the aircraft will be available for inspection by selected companies at this time.

Source: Defence Contracts Bulletin.
Sense would have shifted it when flyable closer to its final destination.....sigh.

It was planned to fly it into Cosford last April but the sums were 'marginal' on braking distances and someone in authority determined the risk was too great.
