602 RAux AF Honorary Air Commodore - Fred the Shred

How long will this state of affairs last? I used to be in the RAuxAF in Edinburgh before the mission support elements relocated to Glasgow when 2MHU became 603 Sqn.

RAF - News by Date

The tw@t will look at this as yet another bauble and social opportunity rather than as a solemn duty with responsibilities. Will he ever dare to show his face???

It was in Private Eye today even though the news is a year old.

This man is not worthy to wear Her Majesty's uniform.

The insult is that his total miss management and his subsequent refusal to surrender funds, obtained under a cloak of smoke and mirrors, directly effects the financial well being of personnel under his honorary command.

This is an untenable state off affairs by any stretch of the imagination or delusion of corporate innocence.

I for one will be lobbying my MP / MSP for a review and change of this Honorary Command.

With respect to serving and past RAuxAF

Cheers

When will the dorks who create these press releases ever get their facts correct?

No 602 (City of Glasgow) Sqn was the first RAuxAF Sqn to be formed. It distinguished itself during World War II and is remembered as having shot down the first enemy aircraft over British soil in Oct 39.
Quite wrong

Battle of Britain history of No. 603 Squadron.

It was operational with Spitfires in time to intercept the first German air raid on the British Isles on 16 October, when it destroyed the first enemy aircraft to be shot down over Britain in the Second World War.
Both quotes from the RAF web pages: the second is the correct one

Concur with the comments on the farcical appointment of Goodwin

If every officer who had messed up big time had their commissions terminated, there wouldn't be many people left in the RAF or any of the other services for that matter.

This isn't exactly fiddling a Mess fund, for which dismissal would certainly be expected...it's a little bit bigger than that! I believe in old-fashioned things like "integrity" and "honour" and Goodwin has neither - hence my fizzing outrage!

He can keep his wretched pension as far as I am concerned, as long as he pays for his own little trainset or toy planes to keep himself amused rather than besmirching the good name of two organisations I am very proud of.

Petition to the PM coming on.....

....and what's more, the HAC's at RAuxAF Sqn's are there to set an example of achievement and integrity to the Sqn members, as well as in my experience to wield influence and bring a steadying hand in high places when needed.

Beggars belief

He is very poor at man management, he doesn't care two hoots about the people who work for him, he doesn't care a jot about the company he works for..... And Fred Goodwin is no better either (but at least Fred resigned)

Duncs senior spent 37 years with 2 MHU; no sure what he'd think of this.

Incidentally, the No 602 Sqn museum - excellent little place; part of the RHF museum on Sauchiehall Street - suggests (with the combat report to back it up) that they shot down the first German ac over mainland UK.

Anyone know how HACs are appointed? I doubt it is Her Maj who thinks "wouldn't he be a splendid chap..." and suspect it is more likely to be the government who put forward names, either as a pat on the back (Douglas-Hamilton was (is) HAC for 2MHU/603 Sqn) or in the hope of a cash bung party donation....seems likely in Goodwin's case.

The HAC thing is usually pretty opaque. AFIAK, it is down to the Sqn Boss to make a suggestion to the chain of command, and the main idea is to have someone who is (a) worthy and interested - and Fred / RBS were quite pally with 43(F) at one point (b) who has influence. When appointed Fred satisfied both criteria well- and I hear that he's been very keen on the 602 connection, turning up quite a lot, which is more than can be said for some others, for whom it is a free dinner once a year.

The individual is then "informally" sounded out, to make sure that if HM TQ proffers said bauble, the worthy in question will say "Yes, thanks very much".

I'm not sure how you sack an HAC - Stella Rimington resigned from her post with one of the Sqns after her book was published, but I don't believe she was sacked per se. Of course, what HM TQ gives, she can take away....

Both claimed it - not sure it has ever been proven conclusively one way or the other.

602 was formed first though!!

I think that if you are a serving officer (and HACs presumably are designated as such) and pay your subs, you can join the RAF Club.

Does he have access to MoD premises or RAF stations? Hope not.

Petition to the PM here:

Petition to: seek the removal of Sir Fred Goodwin from the post of Honorary Air Commodore to 602 Sqn RAuxAF. | Number10.gov.uk

I'm not so concerned about the whys, hows and whatevers concerning his appointment last year, but he should have done the honourable thing regarding the RAuxAF and resigned. Clearly he has no honour and someone will have to give him a shove.

Plenty in the government who will be happy to....this petition appears to have sprung up very quickly!

Done
The only position he should hold for 5 years involves bars and a bleak outlook.
