RAF 2008 Flight Safety Calendar- poor taste!

Whoever chose the photos for the 2008 calendar should be hung out to dry. Showing accidents where people (many of them friends of those looking at the photos) have died is a very undignified thing to have done.
It gets the point across, but is not the best way to do it...

this years was pretty shambolic as well - picture of a Broken Sea King with a caption - long before the BOI reported(has it reported yet?)

Not unlike the Army Air Corps' own goal back in the eighties, where they published Flight Safety posters saying "Statistically we are due our next accident/incident on XXX date". Turned out to be the ultimate self-fulfilling prophecy.

That's nothing. One year they announced on the TV that the murder rate in Dallas was sitting at 496 with about three days to go till the end of the year.

Poor taste indeed. But on the bright side, I would like to tempt fate by suggesting that this years pay award will be around 18%, flying pay will become pensionable, there will be a 50% reduction for married quarters charges and JPA will be scrapped. Statistically, the British armed forces are due the biggest pay rise in 100 years, on 1 April 2008.

Hope you don't mind a post from outside the fence. At the airline I worked at there was an accident which severely injured one of the captains, (a well known and popular bloke). On the flight safety mag a while after, but still whilst 'fresh' there was a cartoon IIRC depicting a similar accident.

There were many comments similar to those expressed here. It was an event that could have happened on almost any flight. The comments that came in were fielded with the argument that by using the example, and the event that everyone knew of, that they were highlighting the hazard and it ensured that it was being discussed to the benefit of all crew and ground handlers, and would help to prevent a similar occurance.

Why do people think that they can do this in the name of safety? It's just sick.

There was massive outrage in the Biking fraternity when the Chief Constable of North Wales Police, Richard Brunstrom held up pictures of a decapitated biker (full up helmet etc) during a press conference to highlight the dangers of motorbikes. The scumbag hadn't even asked the families permission to show the pics. During the following investigation, he even managed to get away with it and avoid the sack.

About 15 years ago, the FS peeps were visiting our UAS. They mentioned the FS calendar and how they were trying to improve the appeal. So they'd approached a consultant:

"We want to improve our 'penetration'..."

"OK - what's the target audience?"

"20-30 year old males, mostly"

"Bums and tits"

"What??!!"

"Bums and tits. That's all that will get their attention"

"But, but we couldn't possibly print such a thing. Just not on"

"Well, no-one is going to look at your calendar then. Good bye!"

I was wondering when that was going to get a mention. I heard about it back in early 99 from a Sqn Ldr who had been working in the same building at the time. The words 'almost S+M' were mentioned, along with the fact that somebody had his wrists slapped big time for producing thousands of copies of it before it was canned.

Crashes have nowt to do with Flight Safety, which is all about preventing them. 'Bums and Tits' with a clear message is what we need.
-pay attention,
-use the right tools,
-handle with care,
RTFM,
-follow the procedures for a satisfactory outcome - that sort of thing.

I certainly never forget a well presented message, with a nice bum and a huge pair of tits.

If it gets the point across and people are talking about it, like they are here, then it must be a good thing.

But it isn't getting the point across, all the talk is about it is negative. A large number of them are likely to be deposited in file B1N or stuck away in the bottom of a drawer. This is:

a. A waste of resources, and

b. A missed opportunity to reinforce the Flight Safety message which is particularly important during the current high operational tempo where many people are stressed and tired.

'Bums and Tits' with a clear message is what we need.

Absolutely right. The Flight Safety posters and messages that have the greatest impact are those that catch the eye and hold the interest for long enough for the message to register. With the many and varied operational tasks that are going on every day there must surely have been enough subject material available to enable the ASG to come up with something intersesting and relevant.

Never forget a Flt. Safety poster depicting a Phallicky looking bolt chasing a 'lady' nut. She is crying out 'No no, not without a washer'!
Never saw much Bums 'n Tits then but the humour worked well.
