Russia Seen as Threat to Scandinavia

Just like the good old days.....

DefenseNews.com: Russia Regarded as a ‘Military Threat’ to Scandinavia

Forsvarets Forsvarsinstitutt (FFI), the Oslo-based Norwegian defense institute, has identified Russia as a potential “military threat” in the region.

The FFI report, “Russia: A Military Power,” observes that while Norway has no reason to fear a threat of military invasion from Russia, a “limited, military action” cannot be ruled out. The FFI advises the Ministry of Defense (MoD) and Norwegian Armed Forces on regional and global defense issues and strategies.

The publication of the report comes as Norway’s political and defense elite grow increasingly concerned about Russia’s growing economic strength in the Nordic and Baltic regions and as the fastest growing supplier of oil and natural gas to the European Union.

Norway’s rising economic star and strengthened defense position needs to be examined in the context of regional security, said Anne-Grete Strøm-Erichsen, Norway’s defense minister. Russia’s burgeoning income from oil and gas sales, and healthy capital reserves, will be used to rebuild its military strength, said the Defense Minister.

“I do not believe that Russia is likely to exert power but then again its military buildup cannot be overlooked. We must always be aware that developments can take another direction to the one we want and expect,” Strøm-Erichsen said in an address to the Oslo Militære Samfund (Oslo Military Society) in January.

Relations between Norway and Russia have been strained of late, over incidents ranging from illegal fishing in the Barents to the failure of Norwegian investments in Russian natural gas fields to restrictions placed by Russia on salmon imports......

This really should come as no surprise to anyone. There are quite clear indicators available in the open press that Comrade P is making moves to restore the old empire...

And Ivan turned up the heat a little bit today.

Special advisor to the Norwegian MOD, Ingjerd Kroken, has been declared persona non grata in Russia. She has allegedly spied on Russian activities in the Kola area.

A bit stange really, since she has been part of the cooperation between Russia, Norway and the US on the cleanup of nuclear waste in the north.

The Norwegian MOD has commented that they find it hard to take the whole thing seriously.

No article in english at the mo.

If I lived in Estonia (NATO and EU member with a land border with Russia) I would be concerned about this. There is an ongoing dispute between the 2 governments over the location of the Tomb to the unkown (Soviet) soldier in the centre of the capital, Tallinn. The Estonian government want it moved away from its current city centre location as it has the potential to be a focus for protests by the significant ethinc Russian part of the population. Russia is discouraging its citizens from taking holidays in Estonia and there is some low level sabre rattling going on in the media.

Just read the book - a cracking good read, although the final battle for Moscow is a bit rushed - as if Freddy Forsyth was running out of time or paper. However, the build-up is credible. One just needs to read this obit in today's Telegraph:http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.../16/db1601.xml. Sr Nigel Irvine from the book?
