Ta v much to the GIB in the "FIN" that waved, made the hassle of the climb worth while!
I thought the SHARS had retired?

GIB or should it be the WSO?
Having spent over 1000 hrs in the rear seat of a Tornado GR1 (don't even think of calling it the "Fin") I object, most strongly, to numpties calling people like me GIB's. GIB's, Backseaters, WSO's, RIO's, are Spamism's. In general that does not do justice to the role that RAF/RN FJ navigators have carried out/continue to carry out, in numerous RAF/RN 2 seat aircraft, over the the last 30-40 years. I was, like a lot of my generation, a NAVIGATOR first and foremost and mighty proud of that fact! The fact that I wasn't the best or most natural the world has ever seen is neither here or there. I was trained properly and once I got the drift of what was required I was always there for my GIF, stick-monkey or mate and like to think that my imput was important and valued. Some of the best, most natural, leaders I ever came across in 38.5 years in the mob were Buccaneer, F4, GR1 and F2/3 NAVIGATORS-not GIB's or stick monkeys-NAVIGATORS. The odd Vulcan bloke weren't too bad either.

Did you know that OASC can pass a bloke for driver but not for navigator? Never used to bother me but, as time goes by.

I would love to spend some time getting some phots like that, although I should think that it takes a lot of practice.
Stunning photo's you must be very proud.
How long on average do you have to hang around to get shots like that? Do you have any inside info or do you just turn up and hope?

Nah, he's not hiding his face either. He's using the mirrors to good effect - "Now, do I look better with clear visor or shaded visor...." They have time for things like that.......

Skunk, the general location is around the area known as the Machynlleth loop.
I've never had a heads up warning from any one, so it is turn up and hope. On Tuesday it was well into late morning before we saw anything. We'd been there (on the hill), since 08:30. I've had one day when only one a/c came past, I've known others who have had 'virgin' days. I find locations through large amounts of detailed map reading. Once you get there though what looks good on a map may not be practical or safe!
If you give it a go follow the countryside code, and make sure you have proper bad weather clothing, as the area has it's own micro climates high off the valley floor which can change in minutes. The last thing you want is a yellow taxi ride or worse.

Thank you very much for the info Jumpseater. I'll be looking at getting a trip to that area organised soon. Ive spent a lot of time on Dartmoor so I hope I should be ok. Just hope the promised loan of a Canon EOS by a friend was genuine and not drink related.
