Future Carrier (Including Costs)

Will this the proposed UK/US Defence Technology Pact (discussed here) help expedite the process of getting CVF and JCA into service?
Has the steel cutting started yet?
This video of the First Sea Lord's response to the carrier announcement includes some automation. An ASaCs Sea King is on the deck. Is this because the MASC platform has not yet been chosen and they put it there to indicate MASC, or is it because the Sea King 7 is expected to last forever?
Should MASC have an IPT of its own? Maybe even a budget?

(It might also have got the Vixen on to the AV-8B - the US were certainly interested ...
Said who?
... in the world's only look down shoot down radar ...
World's only?
... that was packaged into two halves to fit a Harrier).
Can you explain the two halves? Are you saying the transmitter/receiver was separated from the antenna?

Has the work started? Is steel being cut?
CVF does not and will not exist in isolation. Another project it relates to is Military Afloat Reach Sustainability (MARS). A very good source of information on MARS is Richard Beedall's MARS page. Without MARS, high sortie rates from CVF will be impossible to sustain.
The ‘force projection’ role of the Royal Navy requires three key tasks to be fulfilled by MARS:
Fighting ships to be supplied with bulk consumables (BC) – fuel, food, ammunition, stores, water, and air stores to embarked forces.
Joint sea-based logistics (JSBL) support and sustainment to be provided to land forces from the sea to locations potentially well inland from the beachhead and then sustain their operations.
Forward Aviation Support (FAS) – the provision of support to maritime rotary wing operations. The ships will be able to act as a forward maintenance facility for deployed helicopters.
This last task makes up for ASS being cancelled.

I see that as more of a place holder for when Ark, Ocean and Argus need replacing- happily after the QE's are built. Look out for a "through deck" "aviation support ship" concept floating out once the carriers are under construction...

Is this really needed, or is our money burning a hole in our pockets?

You bet it's worth it. I would much rather see Tranche 3 Typhoon, cancelled and 2x carriers with 40+ JSF on it (the CTOL version not the "Jump Jet Fanny" version). I note the video has Sea King Whiskey on it - come on Fishheads stop being a tight-wad and buy Hawkeye 2000!
The real question I believe is can we afford everything that should go with it? Eg. Enough Type 45s as guard/picket ships, AAR capabilities, persistent AEW coverage (ie. Not Sea King!), support ships, etc...
I only hope that the above fears are misguided...

PS Anyone remember "Jump Jet Fanny and Her Hawker Siddeley Tw@t"? See this issue of Viz

Does JSF have sufficient air-defence and ground-attack capability combined that these carriers would be well equipped with only a single type?
If so, why the need for a full-scale catapult-equipped vessel?
