Thats funny, because I can remember the K struggling to get airbourne with a landrover plus 5 pax in it last year from some strips...
why not just come across and get some more hours on the J?
Think you are also confusing "Cant" with "Not yet been cleared".

Silly me, I didn't realise that the K was, in fact, larger in size than the J so that all those big loads won't actually fit through the door, & that it didn't have the ability to lift big stuff when operating 'hot & high'.

I asked the question, & it wasn't intended to start another tedious p***ing contest, of what the K was capable of that the J wasn't, not what it hadn't be cleared to do yet.

Ken,

As I have pointed out in here before I am just billy f@ckwit the galley slave but even I understood the simplicity of your question which was sadly and very obviously a little too lateral for our friend Antique.

He is quick to trot out the usual list of things the things the J model is "currently" not cleared to do but fails to address your actual question. Probably all those months in the garden or the circuit have blunted him some what but the excellant news of last week will no doubt change that in the very near future..............or possibly not

What the hell is going on NOW

The above was originally posted in the "Norway to buy J's" thread and now it has magically appeared in here. The J v K thing, whilst great banter was done and dusted yonks ago and does not need bringing back to life

Why dont the J's Sqns become one big wing, rather than 2 seperate Sqns? Or have one for Tac only and one for route only? Any ideas?

RT - The Js aren't going to become one big wing for the same reason the K's never did. Or the Tornados. Or Jags. Or or or. Smaller sqns exist for lots of reasons including things like personnel management and making sure there are enough sqn beer calls.

MOG - there are still only 2 J sqns. Unless something dramatic happened after half four this afternoon when I left "work".....

Fat A get your finger on the pulse fella,

47 is now a combined K/J sqn, happened over a week ago, so now 3 J sqn's ............and, a reliable source tells us, 47 will eventually have some available K elements to support the ever reliable J

Perhaps a full time posting would allow the new J crews to draw on the vast wealth of ops experience over on 47.
They can find out how to fly circuits, not go to Kandahar or Basrah and harp on about how important it is to pack a run bag so you can sprint away from a crash site.

Useful.

I suppose some top tips about safety altitudes in the Falklands would be fresh news though.

Ah yes, the 'Special' guys. Who have spent the last 20 years telling everyone how difficult it is to fly on goggs. Or land on strips. Or do that 'complicated' airdrop that no-one else can do in case they find out it isn't really that difficult after all

But let's not talk about them. That way they can survive on mystique and we might not guess that it's actually the boys in the back who are special and the flying is just good fun in dodgy places.

Actually, just the latest step in the eventual replacement of the K by the J in ALL SF ops. Like King Canute & the tide, the Nav & Eng mafia can't stop the J taking over!

Perhaps not the best comment with a certain anniversary coming up soon - you tw t!

These difficult jobs that anyone can do seem to have resulted in a certain C130K sqn being the most highly decorated in the RAF.

It would be nice if some of you J guys who are quick to dismiss what the most operationally experienced and qualified crews at Lyneham actually do, could be bothered to go and ask them to give you the benefit of 20 years of supporting ops.

I'm sure those crews can't wait for you to take over and release them from the months of deployements, often at short notice and in poor conditions, the constant threats and lack of support from the rest of the stn aircrew.

Or perhaps you just think it might be a little too difficult and demanding!!

A good platform doesn't automatically provide a good service!

Priceless antique, absolutely priceless and I think if you re read your last you will understand just how silly you now look

Do you actually believe that the only SF experience is on station is on the southside and that there are no ex SF guys on the J

And the supposition that the flight are the only guys who:-

"I'm sure those crews can't wait for you to take over and release them from the months of deployments, often at short notice and in poor conditions, the constant threats and lack of support from the rest of the stn aircrew."

is nothing short of a complete insult to all the crews J and K who risk their lives on a daily basis on Herrick and Telic, live in crap accom and regularly get dicked at short notice for det's.

I strongly suggest you have a word with yourself you ar@e

Having been a regular reader, but not poster on this site, I felt compelled to reply to the utter bull being spouted by 'Antique Driver'. I have no idea who you are but your lack of knowledge about certain K ops and your juvenile aircraft banter leads me to believe you either were refused a job with the flight, or failed to get a J posting.

Stop spouting boll s about things you know nothing of - those of us who appreciate what combined ops have to offer are welcoming the changes with open arms.

We are all working hard and risking our lives on a daily basis in different theatres, each type doing the job it is currently fragged to do.

Stop being a tw t - with your arrogance and lack of knowledge the closest you'll get to the flight is Guiness and Pies!!! (And if you are who I think you are then even that will be in doubt)

Rant over - back to hibernation mode!!

To all Lyneham's lad & lasses where ever you are - fly safe.

Within the undiluted effluent spouted by Antique Driver I just spotted the above gem - surely after all his comments he didn't really mean to describe the J as a 'good platform', even if he was trying to be insulting, and ignorant of the fact that a large number of J pilots & ALMs have considerable K experience, SF, Tac & route - possibly more K experience than many of those southside, himself included probably.

I think an orderly transition from the K to the J in the SF role, with cooperation on both sides, is surely the way ahead, and therefore operating both types on 47 Sqn is a significant positive step. It's time that this rather pathetic in-fighting between the 2 types ceased, that we acknowledge that the J is the future, but that the experience on the K should be incorporated into the J world & hopefully into the A400M in the future, if that aircraft ever makes it into service.

We're all supposed to be on the same side, we have enough enemies out there, in Government, the Treasury, public ignorance & apathy, our own fast jet-centric leaders, and lets not forget the bad guys in Iraq, 'stan etc.

How about this being the last posting on this thread? In a new spirit of cameraderie & cooperation we HERCULES operators link arms & face the future together, rather than squabbling like children over who's got the best toy? Without wishing to resurrect the execrable 'T**m Lyneham, how about we actually work together for a change?

Let's put this thread to bed!
