Proof of Concept trials quickly showed that the proposal of both flying and defending the aircraft when crewed solely by a rear gunner was seriously flawed.

Raleigh had seriously misinterpreted the specifications in the War Office's 1938 Fighter Competion, however, it's performance actually outstripped some of the other entries.
