Harrier Crash Video

Disregarding the ignorant comments below the video, does anyone know the details behind this Harrier crash?

Cheers! M2

Exclamation

Whoops, looks like I'll be answering my own question. According to this BBC news report, the pilot moved the throttles to full, while at the same time moving the nozzles to horizontal. Therefore, all the downward thrust was removed and the plane went for a swim! The pilot is flying again.

Cheers! M2

Try reading some of the comments below the clip on that 1st site. On second thoughts - don't. You'll just be annoyed that such mongers have access to the internet!

Going on current form, they're clearly future presidential candidates, I would say!

I knew by saying to ignore the comments that a lot of people would read them...some real idiots out there, aren't there?!?

Anyhow, I was glad to hear the pilot was OK and that he is back on flying status again. I was just in Lowestoft last month, was a favorite stomping ground of mine back in the early 80's when I was stationed in the UK. Does anyone know why he was hovering there? Was it a display?

Cheers! M2

"Does anyone know why he was hovering there? Was it a display?"

It was a trial of a new, ejecting type aircraft battery according to the American website. A very important battery. They deliberately crash the plane by shutting down its engines, just to test it. Apparently the battery broke when it landed on the jet!

Honest, I read it with my own eyes.......

Pond life, alive and well out there.....

M3,

not that there's anything wrong with it at all, but how come you 'happened' on the website www.big-boys.com ??

Nice to know there's another website out there that promotes well-educated reasoned discussion on aviation matters though ....

I get all of my US news from there. You should try it, there are articles on all kinds of neat stuff. Just like the Daily Star really.

Was the Battery recovered at all ? Probably damaged beyond repair after hitting that model I should think.

I think the damage to the battery wasn't "terminal". They just took him to happy hour and topped up his electrolyte. I don't think he was charged

Having just spent a very amusing 15 minutes reading all the comments there I shall have to email my ex collegues on 20 sqn tomorrow asking them to turn themselves in to the MOD police for flying a russian aircraft, no wonder its hard to fly, the aircrew manual the give is for a GR7 when all the time it's a MIG 28......

Too much TOP-GUN/Tom Cruise for my liking.

Note how many 'americans' on that thread do not realise that the Harrier is a British invention, not to mention that the RAF do not have Harriers, the Marines (and someone said Army) do instead

Oh, but it's a Marines AV-8B, cause the "air force don't use them".

Ignorance

I once talked to a fellow in the USN, he said to me himself that most Americans (i'm going to get flamed here by the yanks aren't I?)
are oblivious to what is actually going on outside of the States and that everything is invented by them and no one else exists.
He is right, i was asked by someone in the US where i live, i said "UK" and she said "I'm not familiar with that state?"

OK, whereas I am sure all of us got a good laugh out of the comments on that web site, do us a favor on please don't lump all Americans as being 'ignorant.' Some of us do know where the UK is (and can find it on a map), as well as Iraq, Afghanistan, and a myriad of other places we get sent to. Yes, I will admit that our educational level is lower than that in the UK, but all in all we aren't a bad lot and I have lots of Brit friends that love the place.

But, on the other side of the coin, when we left Texas in 2002, and I told people we were going to Belgium, most replied, "Isn't that in Germany?" Well, one could argue that it has been part of Germany twice in the past 100 years, but after a while I just figured it was easier to say yes...

But, when I lived in the UK for two years and told people I was from Florida, most thought everyone was within walking distance of Disney World. Either that or they would ask me if I knew so-and-so, someone they met when they went on holiday there five years earlier. Ignorance is not just bliss, but plentiful; we all have our share.

Now, back to the yank-bashing!

Cheers! M2

Maybe we're judging Americans by their elected president. If he's so smart, how come he employs Mrs. Malaprop as a speech writer? His election really depressed me; I wonder if the US should go back to its foreign policy of 1938 and become isolationists again.

As a young Midshipman I made my way to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar. There were several Americans from a cruise liner also docked.

Mr and Mrs Middle Aged American were standing looking South (it was a very clear day).

Mrs turned to Mr and said "What's that large island over there?"
