Defence: Public ignorance, the media, and cutbacks

Sadly there is a danger that the knuckle draggers will insist it is.
Consider the outbreak of racist views following the recent Westminster attack. That young Muslim woman who was seen using her phone was picked out by the media and forced to explain herself - if she had been blonde would this have happened? Over on Jet Blast, someone wrote something along the lines of regarding all Muslims as terrorists. Just what Daesh want...

Why do we continue to have these stupid arguments? The fact is, we never see where the next threat is coming from. We continue to fashion our forces on the last threat. We have to have a broader vision and be more nimble in our procurement.

FOI requests continue under Purdah. All that changes is that as Parliament no longer exists the obligations of the FOIA no longer exist. which means that the 20 day turn round is no longer obligatory. The FOI teams still exist and FOI requests are still dealt with. As soon as Parliament is in existence again the 20 day obligation returns.

Just heard Labour's Emily Thornberry on the Andrew Marr show say NATO would still be vital because we would need their help to move the Army off Salisbury Plain, as we don't have enough Frigates to move the Army...
I've searched this thread and can't find any mention of immigration and Brexit.
Thats remarkable. Outside in the real world nobody gives the armed forces a second thought, the existential threats to the UK are immigrants and membership of the EU.
A majority of the population are willing to destroy everything to end FoM, the armed forces included.

maybe because it still has a tenous link to Military Avaiation - if immigration appears it'll be off to jet Blast.......

That actually sounds rather negative Betty but I admit that politics does depress me a great deal and there isn't much in the Campaign so far to change my mind. I wish someone would at least TRY to tell the Public some truths but it all seems to be spin and ridiculous promises - all sides TBH
I cannot remember anyone instigating a discussion about the military threat from abroad since the end of the Cold War. An invasion of immigrants and the EU, thats another thing.
So, yes, there is complete public ignorance about defense because they can not see any threat.

I think you are missing OWR's point - she appeared to be unaware that:
a. Frigates are not for moving troops.
b. If the RN did not have a manpower issue (due to cuts mostly) more ships could be fully operational.

Purdah, I believe is now over and there's no change of government so it should be carrying on from where we left off. But of course, the Government is in a very different place from where it was 2 months ago. It now needs to tread carefully; bold decisions are unlikely to be made and politically difficult issues might get put on the back burner which could affect Defence if they are linked in any way. And if austerity is cancelled, expect to see cuts in budgets to keep other politically sensitive areas e.g. welfare, education, policing etc funded. Could Defence spending take a hit or be re-profiled to keep benefits flowing to stave off the potential threats inherent in a second election down the line? Of course, with books fudged to then hit the 2% target.
