Advice on allowances

Hi everyone,

I have recently started a new posting, and as part of our tasking we are required to cover a 12 hour taskline from 2000 to 0800. Obviously, to comply with crew duty rules, this involves sleeping during the day, which results in the crews missing most (if not all) meals in their respective messes. It seems to me that we should be able to claim some sort of allowance for this (perhaps missed meals allowances or DS).
I am hoping that someone here has experience of a similar situation, and may be able to offer advice. The duty period is a minimum of one week at a time, so crews can end up spending a substantial amount of money on food. I have obviously read JSP 752, but as I don'y have a degree in law, this has proved fruitless!

Thankyou in advance for any help you can give,

TheBoat.

We are on base here in the UK. Breakfast is normally not a problem, but lunch is missed due to sleeping, and dinner often is as well. I only ask beacuse someone mentioned that they knew of a Gazelle unit who actually declared field conditions when on a similar setup, thereby gaining several allowances.

Sorry, probably haven't explained very well. The meals are missed, but as the crews are then awake overnight, they end up buying their own food (mainly takeaways etc.).

I don't own this space under my name. I should have leased it while I still could

Before you can start to claim anything you need to ensure that 24 hr messing is not available. I don't know your situation but if you have a need for 24 hr messing then the system should provide. If it is more one of convenience rather than lack of provison then no chance.

Once, when I was on a rota 14 hr night/10 hr day, I used to get a packed lunch, after breakfast, before going to bed. Naturally I would wake around midday but with the packed lunch in the room did not worry that I could not get back to sleep, would miss lunch, and spend the afternoon hungry. Without that pcked lunch I would have been tempted to get up. With the comfort blanket of a packed lunch I would drop off to sleep again and then put the packed lunch in the bin.

Pontius,

Thanks for your message. We don't have twenty four hour messing, but your idea of a lunch box is a good one, and I suspect that is what we will end up with!

Can't answer your question but know who can! Pop over to ARRSE and find the MGS guys, the ones who guard the camp, there is a well trodden path on what you can claim. Field conditions is not the answer, all that will do is make food that is provided for you will come at public expense......if it is not provided in the first place, you have defeated the whole object.

You're entitled to squat.

Your base should do a duty meal, but unless you already pay messing (by living in), you'd still have to pay for that.

Everyone who's done guard should know you get nothing for 12hr duties, you can only claim food for a 24hr duty.

I'm afraid that seems about right. If you're on duty overnight 'permanently' then duty food should be provided in that period, be it packed lunch or otherwise. We did irregular night standbys with no food provided as it wasnt unreasonable to have dinner (bfast) then work then breakfast (diiner?) then rest (remember few of us get lunch at public expense or as part of DMR as its been PAYD for ages) Also, if you are off duty you cant miss a meal due to service reasons therefore no MMA....

HOWEVER, this isn't for you to sort, simply ask of spt wg, "where do we eat"?
