Training - separate from fleet, if you’re not meeting their standards, you fail that’s it!

In short, ompany short of experienced pilots, easy way to get that experience on the books is by accelerated command and direct entry. Accelerated; the moment you join you’re increasing the experience levels in RHS so job done. Whether you upgrade quicker or not doesn’t really matter, all they want is experience in RHS. DEC; moment you join they can say we have experience in LHS. if you fail course (like a few have done recently), no problem you can stay in RHS and they gain your experience! Either way they win!

basically it’s a numbers game, at moment one they’re not winning!
let’s wait and see what pay review and profit share are!

Could not have said it better.

p.s. I have spent 20 years at EK…

similar conundrum

Sorry I don't have any good advice to pass on, but wanted to share I am in a similar situation.
Currently left seat of a narrow-body (at a LCC). with more than enough hours in all requirements with lots of long haul. Considering this move too., but don't want to give up the LS.
Appreciate the voices and opinions shared!
Would like to believe the current market conditions will support a need for the honoring of an "accelerated command" but the risks of upsetting the wrong person or not impressing the right person, and how other pilots have been dealt with in the past cannot be ignored.
But I have avoided career risks in the past and I am not sure that has played out so well, so feeling torn between continuing on the not-so-successful low risk path, or taking this plunge.
Now, where did I put that phone number of that really great (self-proclaimed) clairvoyant I met at the fair all those years ago?

Does anybody know how long does it take from applying for the position till job offering?

Enos 23rd July 2024 20:06

It’s a rumour site do here I go.

Apparently the pool of eligible 777 FOs will dry up next year, that’s probably why they’re advertising for narrow body captains for accelerated command. The company needs pilots with previous command experience but can not find pilots with wide body long haul experience that are flying for airlines with high standards. If you’re flying for a legacy carrier why leave it.

The fail rate for command on the Boeing is low maybe because the upgrades got put back due covid and the FOs have been around longer I hear on the Airbus it’s higher.

As far as you might fail the upgrade and lose your command forever. This probably won’t happen but ask yourself are you an average or above operator. If the answer is yes, Then Apply 👍
Do I fail sim checks regularly do I have lots of trouble with colleagues maybe you suspect you have issues with your stupid filter then don’t apply 👎

What I hear from senior guys is they want people from Low cost airlines that have high standards and rigid SOPs

Narrow body DECs did workout in the past for the most part but there were some issues and that’s why they want people with command experience, who can learn the operation from the right seat and slot across to left quickly.

The Bogeyman
He does exist at Emirates just like every other airline “If you get that guy in the sim he’ll fail you” !!
To put you at ease there are 1000s of pilots here and very very few if any TREs that will chop a good guy.

The TREs do not operate with impunity if they fail someone they have to justify it to the training department, there is cost involved with roster recovery and re training.

Think of it here. If you have a problem the company is good. If you are the problem the company is really bad! Same goes for TREs If they just want to chop people, it doesn’t matter if they’re expat or local they get chopped.

Moving goal posts
It does happen just like any other airline, factors outside the control of the airline can impact what happens inside the airline and you.

If you come for an accelerated command here, good on you for doing it there are lots of opportunities to be had.

BUT

Nobody cares that you were the youngest captain at …… airline or you were a check airman back home.
If an old guys say “your mother must be proud of you” he’s probably sick of hearing about it.

“In Ryanair” Yeah yeah I know! The last 100 Ryanair guys told me

Good luck

Another great post 👏

My own 2c.

Think of it as a 360 life changing move; don’t just think about the possibility of getting your upgrade but also think about all the other benefits You will get for Your family such as housing, schooling, safety, etc..
Point is: are you happy back home, well settled in your operations and everything is smooth family-wise? Then think twice.
Are you getting sick of flying LCC because you’ve been doing it for the last 20 years and at 40yo you’ve achieved all your careers goals and you want to try something different and most important your family is looking for a change? Then go for it, but be aware that once you live your comfort zone you will start from scratch.
During my time at EK I have flown with FOs who had been 15 years + on the LHS on narrow bodies and were looking for the big move.
Some were a pleasure to fly with. Others were a nightmare because they wanted to show you from day one that “I could take your seat buddy”. Guess who was successful in the end.

YosserHughes 24th July 2024 07:52

Wow...back to back positive and realistic posts!! Must be a first on here!!... Thanks for contributing guys.

"...Others were a nightmare because they wanted to show you from day one that “I could take your seat, buddy."

This is the worst kind of "colleague" one could have by their side. And, of course, it's not only in Emirates; it's everywhere.

We, as pilots, are supposed to work as a team, looking for a safe and positive flight. Too bad some guys don't see it that way.

Meanwhile, we keep going. Safe flights!

Can only imagine how much of a pain it would be to fly with such an FO. Perhaps as bad as the captain who seems intent on proving you know nothing, drops subtle hints that they think nothing of you and they're only with you because regulations dictate.

I just want to know what happens when these two types fly together!

The team aspect is so important, it's a different job when it works well.

Cabair351 24th July 2024 13:32

As a captain why take the risk of Accelerated Command at EK? Qatar are hiring DECs as we speak.

Usually it’s loads of frustration behind each type.

The pain in the arse Captain has usually failed the instructor interview a few times because the assessors have understood that this type of guy is looking for a sword to chop heads and does not really care about training per se.

The pain in the arse FO “I-am-ready-for-the-LHS” has either a previous unsatisfactory career or just came to the ME with the words “command command command” echoing in is head.

Both have a dark future.

Come to EK and first of all enjoy the ride. Study, be focused and live Your life. Things will come before you know it.

Youwish 24th July 2024 13:36

Qatar is not hiring DEC as we speak… Only FO
at least this is what I heard by some complaining examiners.

Cabair351 24th July 2024 14:02

DEC

Nonsense Youwish. 2 friends have upcoming DEC assessments.

Captain Spam Can 24th July 2024 14:37

Assuming you apply for accelerated command, are successful and complete the two recurrent sims in the right seat after just over 12 months what’s the upgrade process? Is it interviews and sim assessment like LCC’s or your just eligible to join the course and have to pass it like legacy’s?

An assessment is not a job offer. At the moment QR is officially not hiring DEC, at least not into WB.

They continuously interview but DEC are currently only placed in the talent pool. They last hired DEC about a year ago or so.
They always keep people ready in the talent pool in case they need.

Cabair351 24th July 2024 16:02

DEC

Again, nonsense.
I'll just leave it there.

SunnyTheSemen 24th July 2024 20:45

I know two very good commanders with Australian passports who have recently accepted job offers.

Any advise how to prepare for interview? What website is the best for preparation? What sort of technical questions should I expect?
