Flying into Iraq
Does anybody have some info on flying into Iraq?
i.e. how likely is it that you might find yourself with an air to air missile up your a#@, like these poor blokes flying the DHL A300... I haven't heard of any civilian aircraft been shot down since that DHL A300, so I figure it cant be all that bad... Anyway, it would be much appreciated if anybody with flying experience there could tell me what it's really like in this lovely part of the world. Thanx, cheers |
They for some reason don't like the colour yellow. Why? Who knows!!!

I flew a B737 into Basrah twice a couple of years ago. (Taking British troops back to the U.K. for some well deserved leave).
We operated in and out at night. No external lights (including nav lights) or cabin lights were selected on until the landing lights very shortly before touchdown. I wouldn't fancy doing it during the day mind. Regards Exeng |

In one word...interresting
went into Baghdad during daytime..with a B727-200... controllers will clear you over the airfield..fl310 not uncommon you start your SPIRAL descend over the field VISULALLY..visually climbing aircrafts not uncommon no instrument approaches for you to bother with you have to contain your climb and descent within 5 NM of the airport watch out for sams and small arms fire during last stages of the approach two observation baloons to avoid on the eastern part of the airfield when i operated there ..had to pay landing fees in cash(us dollars please) had to uplift fuel since refuelling was an unsure thing and yes..got a TCAS RA instructing moi to DESCEND-INCREASE RATE OF DESCEND when i was out of 11300 ft (1800 fpm R/D) for approx. 4 seconds which felt like 4 hours all in all ,..an interresting experience |
Do not forget to mention 1000 m vis, UAV `s all aver the place, clearances to hold 10mi south @9000`..and airport `stage black` after landing..:}
