Another QR Hijack attempt

A fight between a passenger and flight attendants on a Qatar Airways plane sparked a hijacking scare Thursday, prompting the plane to return to Amman on a day of increased tensions on flights after a foiled terror plot in Britain.

Initial reports from airport security officials and an airline spokesman said the man, identified as an Eritrean, tried to force his way into the cockpit carrying a canister that the officials said contained a liquid.

But Jordanian government spokesman Nasser Judeh told The Associated Press that it "was a quarrel and not a hijacking attempt" and that the liquid was medicine.

The Eritrean man had tried to go to a bathroom 10 minutes after the flight took off from Amman for the Qatari capital, Doha, Judeh said.

When the attendants told the passenger he could not leave his seat yet, he pushed an attendant to the ground before others restrained him, Judeh said. The pilot returned the plane to Amman, where the man was detained.

Airport security officials confirmed the story, saying the man started screaming that he wanted to speak to the pilot to complain about the flight attendants for stopping him.

The man told security officials he was furious over what he called "brutal treatment" by the flight attendants and had demanded to talk to the pilot to complain. When he tried to head toward the cabin, it sparked fears of a hijacking attempt, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the press.

The company resumed its flight to Qatar later Thursday with all passengers onboard except for the Eritrean man, who was still in custody, a Qatar Airways official in Jordan said.

well.. you can sometimes expect things like this to happen in certain parts of this world.. just glad everything came out OK and no one was hurt as a result of one mans actions... in my time here this seems to be the 3rd event of this nature within this airline.. but we're not alone.. happens to others as well I’m sure..
that’s why the airline invested millions in bullet proof security entrance door on every flight deck.. as well as the strict door password policy and surveillance camera protocol.

job well done crew.:D

The good news is nothing serious hapenned.
The question is why do things like these (pax agression) happen ?
Let us look at a scenariowhere pax que up for a long time, going through check in, security, immigration, etc...
Pax take their seats, allowing for ground preparations, it will be quite some time before airborne.
Pilots leave seat belts sign for a long period of time, sometimes unnecesarilly.
Some airlines leave the signs up to 10 000ft,
Some time pilots just forget to switch them off ( I have done it myself)
While the signs are on usually the cabin crew do not want to "disturb" the flight deck (just to ckeck/remind),
In the mean time some poor pax with a weak bladder is desperate to go for a relief.
I have seen this happen to paxs(to myself on an occasion), and some cabin crew do not know how to handle this situation. They will quite correctly stop pax from moving about. The sad thing is they can do it without finesse, causing the already agravated pax to blow theifuses, and before you know it the whole thing is blown out propotion.
It is much worse if you are sitting in the economy section.

Well said Capt Krunch, however I think you are being just a little bit optimistic about the camera and flight deck door policy.
The Amman crew obviously were doing the right thing, and well done to them, but some QR crews (no doubt other airlines aswell) are not taking the flight deck door policy seriously. Maybe now they will, at least for a few months until this incident is forgoten.

i wud have to say that our foolish friend from eritrea was pretty lucky. these days and given what was going on in londun i'm surprised people didnt go right to def con 1. remeber the southwest airlines who had half the cabin stomping on him- killing him in the process- after he went bizerk?

some of the attitudes are concern. flying at a previous midle east airline, it seemed some captains thought this was a american only problem- won't happen here because sept 11th was all a zionist conspiracy and good muslims would never do something like this. when they implimented the flight deck door policy, i got the impression that some of the guys would have prefered to counsil a posible hijacker about their misguided ways, that this is unislamic conduct, etc. etc.
