A positive statement about Qatar Airways

reading many of your negative comments about QR, I feel the duty to describe my positive experience in the company. I joind QR as a F/O on A320 , 2 years after I was upgraded to Captain, (if i didn't join QR I would had needed 7 more years in my previous airline to start dreaming about command !!!! ) . Not only I was upgraded in a short time , but now I ame looking for a command on 330 hopefully end of this year, Can any one tell me were the hell and how many company's in the world will offer the same benefit ... Let's be faire, every company has it negative and positive, so what if AAB want me to put my hat, so what if I cant smoke in uniform!!!! not only that , but lets ask the Question: why we have in QR ex-pilots from Anset and Airlingus airline, those were great company's, with a good social protection system and unions to protect pilots from management abuses, however these good pilots contracts were terminated , So when AAB is recruting 60 pilots every year untill 2005, good company's are terminating many contracts!!!! Ho is better, AAB or those , lets cut the sh...., please, pilots working for QR ( like most of world pilots) are working for either 2 good reasons: 1 - they like the company or 2- they dont have an alternative even if you are among the second type , QR is giving bread and butter untill you find the company of your dreams , about the salary... eventhough there wasn't a raise since 5 years , however, the salary is equel or better then most of europe Company's exept the Major flag carriers, finaly I would like to advise pilots ,specialy those ho are looking for an upgrade to command to apply for the airline, having the chance for command in QR, is mutch better then being F/O in lufthansa for next 20 years.... |
pleased to hear this and i am glad you are happy...as are many of the crew...as i was ( in general )...but NOBODY knows when this jumped up gerbil is likely to strike next!
incidentally, he was meant to be speaking at a conference of sorts in London last night...as someone on an another thread so nicely put it...what would he talk about? How to run an airline? anyway, you are happy and it's good to hear that flight deck are moving fast...GMFO is a good man to have there i believe... NA, please also bear in mind that a lot of these comments come from the other side of the cockpit door...you guys had it a tad better than us to be fair... ;) |

I stick around for reasons number one and number two, plus my family is fairly happy at the moment. For those who consider applying in a near future here are some facts you should be aware of: -the more family members joining you in Doha, the lower your pay check is going to be at the end of the month, that's obvious I agree. QR does not make a clear distinction of your social status. You come here as an FO on your own and you'll put quite a bit more money in a bank than a Captain with kids going to school. Emirates caters to that (I know, Emirates again), but not QR. - your bank account goes down to about zero when the number of children going to school is 3 or more. - here with a family you'll need eventually two vehicules and a good 4x4 is expensive. (My wife reminds me everyday on how nice it would be to go to the desert with our friends once in a while, and so on......sorry cannot afford it. - you will need to fly your family back home a couple of times of year, whether you like it or not (they'll need it), and the airline pays for one ticket only per year of service. But don't get me wrong, it's worth coming here. Everything is expensive here but the place is a good place specially if you have kids. If you're not working at the moment, it's worth the try. Good bunch of people all around. The airline is OK too, as far as I am concerned. Everything takes longer that one is used to, but eh just don't fight it, that's all. Yes I know we have this very controversal CEO of ours, who worries more about us wearing our uniform hats than us being happy and getting paid enough. Here they figure it's cheaper to have people employed for a year or so, then to replace them with fresh lemons that they have to train from scratch and so on, and so on...........than to pay a bit more and have experienced people around longer and save on continious training and whatever burden and stress and incovenience that impose on running the airline in general....but he is the CEO and the Sheikh knows everything he does and approves it I guess. They must know something we don't. Mr. Al Baker, if you want to save a bit of money and make quite a few of us happy, let's drop the hat from the uniform. This is something of the past, and we ain't no military operation. Your way of doing things is a one way affair, please show that you care a bit. Don't make a big hassle out of minor cases, your employees do it for you on a regular basis. That being said, don't miss out on the opportunity if they offer it to you. as I was reading back my last posting, second paragraph from the end, I could not figure out what it meant so I guess I was trying to say something like this: Don't make a big hassle out of minor cases at every opportunity, the vast majority of your employees don't and nobody should either. FO Pay 12000Qr
Capt Pay Housing alloawance and housing costs 16000Qr Schooling allowance and schooling costs max 1600QR( costs about twice that amount) Flight allowances 10QR: duty hour Working pattern, ie days on / off both A320 & A330 not defined. As an average you will have 8days off/month with a lot of nightflying. F/O 65H/month, capt 70H/month Leave days per year 45 NA, QR is not bad to work for but it could be one of the best! Regarding your upgrades..It is true, you can upgrade very quickly at QR. 5000Hrs and one year in the company is what you need. But you have to admit that you have to be very carefully in that one year in order not to step on anybody's toes or you can forget the upgrade. Upgrades are subject to experience, merrit and seniority and merrit gives them all the freedom they need to keep you from upgrading if needed! Pay is better then elsewhere when you think about europe but.....dont forget you still have to pay for your own pension, Lol, social security etc etc.....at the end of the day the pay isnt that great you know! Besides that you have to compare QR with GF and EK and when you do that its pretty lame....especially when you take inti account shooling, housing and living costs... As said before....QR is not bad but it could be much better...little thing on the Human aspects would change a lot! And plse remember, we have only discussed situation of the cockpit crews, what about the FAs and the rest of the staff? I still recommend QR to a lot of people but you need to give them a good view about the reality......because nobody klnows anything about it untill you are actually there Its our task to say what we know! regards PS;;;;NA, just upgraded hey....Congrats! sorry, here we go again.... I am thinking of joining, but please enlighten me on the following details: -is the housing allowance sufficient to get a spacious house for a family? -how do you arrive at figure of 21000 Total for an F/O. It is 12000 basic+4500 housing+duty hours. Certainly the duty hours per month are not 500 are they, bringing the pay to the 21000 you mention -how does life in the Emirates compare to life in Doha? Housing allowance is 4500QR! The standard in Doha for expats is 6500QR so if you see it that way its not enough!
If you are a westerner you will need approximately 2000QR extra to live nice. Off course the sky is the limit and you find houses for 18000QR/month as well but for 6-7000QR you will feel comfortable. If you are used to middle eastern living you will find a big house for 4000QR as well. Different standards, different prices! We get some extras as well so believe me, you will take home between 20500QR and 22000QR a month as a F/O and around 29000QR/month as captain! They will explain that to you on your interview... Doha compared to Dubai.....well....lets put it this way. If you are a quiet family orientated guy who likes to go out on trips in nature, who enjoys good food tec you will prefer the little town life of Doha! Doha is changing rapidly and I enjoy it! Dubai is more hectic, bigger and more modern so if you need to go out a lot etc you will prefer Dubai... Dubai still is a little more liberal but Doha is catching up... Hope this helped... |
