Happy Days

The music and the 'eye candy' at the mariners club was always stunning. The take-away was pretty good too .

Even the Marines Club isnt what it was once the band and Cherie Garcia left for Doha.

nolimitholdem 3rd Mar 2020 17:37

But the memories live on...!

Pop into Dubai Central Prison. Then you'll realise this is no place to holiday or take up employment.

fatbus 4th Mar 2020 19:26

MW very good point .

kikatinalong 4th Mar 2020 19:49

Always could get a good takeaway at Cyclones ;)

Especially when the cops showed up. :)

Must visit to Burj Khalifa. Thanks for sharing some beautiful destination of Dubai.

RoyHudd 28th Mar 2020 00:47

Opticians in Emirates/Dubai Mall. Buy serious dark shades, then view the big buildings under construction and dull the sight of the unprotected slave workers in the 48 heat. Keep them on for your stay, so as to obscure all the other ghastly human abuse sights.

Have fun habibi

Yawnnn. Did you come to the right forum? Isn't The Guardian the spiritual home to this brand of one-eyed woke vitriol?

olster 29th Mar 2020 03:56

I don’t think that you need to be particularly woke to recognise human rights being violated in the Dubai sand pit. I do think one’s social conscience needs to be set aside and personally far from a Guardianista but appalled at the poor guys toiling away in the crazy heat of the summer.

Please. I don't think you'll find a person who isn't sympathetic to this. I was making two different points: (1) this isn't the right forum to peddle a wokester agenda, particularly if (2) its badly articulated and based on a overly simplistic and one-eyed view.

If the OP wants proper discourse on a topic that surely warrants it, he better be able to articulate a cogent argument, rather than resort to trite one liners, accompanied by a smug self congratulatory pat on the back for "scoring one" for the liberal luvvies.

olster 29th Mar 2020 11:10

Fair enough...!

SOPS 29th Mar 2020 12:07

The way things are going.. visiting the UAE .. or anywhere else in the world will be off the agenda for sometime. ( In Australia .. without using the words .. we have just been locked down for at least 6 months. International travel is banned. Inbound people are being quarantined under Army guard for at least 2 weeks. I think International air travel is doomed for a while.

Can you guys please stop perpetuating that idiotic coonspeak in here? There's nothing hip about it. Even Cosby agrees.

olster 29th Mar 2020 17:51

Makes no sense, mate. Never mind.

Pif Paf 30th Mar 2020 06:04

So far my top destination in Dubai is:
my sofa
kitchen
computer PlayStation
bed

stay safe out there!

RoyHudd 30th Mar 2020 13:15

Let me be clear. There are no good places to visit in Dubai, bar the departure lounge at DXB, as already written in scrotometer's contribution. The place and the whole of the UAE is a nasty little ****hole. And it is densely populated by people who are able to turn a blind eye to the abuse of workers whilst themselves coining it and living a comfortable life. One of my sons included. As for being woke, I doubt that I would have survived my time in the forces with such attitudes.

WTF is coonspeak, btw.? Now that does sound offensive.

Emma Royds 30th Mar 2020 14:05

I doubt that EK pilots forming a picket line outside the Ministry of Labour will change very much.

The country is not densely populated by people who are coining it. One estimation I read two years ago was that as little as 10% of the ex-pat population in the country (give or take 800,000) earn more than 5K AED per month.

planeur 24th Apr 2020 01:26

Those expat labourers are getting some well earned downtime, Cosy in dormitories working on their herd immunity whilst giving the top ten must sees in Dubai a miss. They'll be fresh as daisies and gagging for the sunshine before long after all the cribbage and canasta. The downtime may very well be extended though as the projects run into trouble without a bung from the south. Anyway there'll always be another hell hole for them to play their trade. Pilots and picket lines Emma, imagine that : )

Emma Royds 24th Apr 2020 12:54

The virus hasn't affected construction! Afterall, the endless queues of people waiting to move into new homes can't be ignored! :E :E

TCAS v2 28th Apr 2020 22:46

Best spot to visit is the departure lounge at the airport with a cancelled visa and one way ticket back to reality :D

Yes! Did this 2 1/2 years ago and never looked (or been) back.

EchoKilla 11th May 2020 07:05

Hahahah! also the vat return booth for all u lucky lucky tourists who paid 30% more than On Sales price in the UK. Let’s not forget IMF recommendations of 10% VAT and the neighbors across the desert increasing it to 15%!! Let’s see what UAE will opt for? 12.5% to keep big bro happy or 17.5% to top big bro?

Returning to the question posed by the OP, I've always enjoyed a few days stay in the Hatta Fort Hotel - a bit dated, yes, but I've always considered that one of its charms. The temperature is usually much cooler in Hatta, and the place is pretty laid-back.

Best place in the UAE

TCA v2 hit the nail on the head. I was there last year. All done and dusted. Visa cancelled , one way ticket. Great feeling. It was my 3rd time at bat as an expat with 25 years overseas. Everywhere else I was truly sad to leave. But the UAE, happiness was V1 at DXB : )

Hatta is actually really nice. Mainly because it's nothing like being in Dubai.

Could be really nice except for the large amount of rubbish and plastic bags left in and out of the water at the Hatta Pools by some charming visitors ...
