Gay relatives visiting in DXB

Please forgibe any perceived ignorance. Considering EK at the moment and have a a married Brother in law who is gay, he and his husband have a child. My children are particularly close with their cousin.

Are there any restrictions in their family visiting us and staying with us in comlany accommodation?

Many thanks in advance.

We are all currently U.K.

No problem. We have plenty of gay cabin crew, and even pilots that fly Boeings are tolerated .
This would be the least of the problems with joining EK .

Laker 11th Mar 2019 16:46

That is an irresponsible answer from Don. Being gay is illegal in the UAE. As is sex outside of marriage. People rarely get caught but when they do things can get really bad very quickly.

United Arab Emirates LGBTI Resources | Rights in Exile Programme
All sexual activity outside of heterosexual marriage is illegal in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and carries a penalty of “confinement for a minimum period of one year” (UAE Penal Code article 356).

The UAE Penal Code is ambiguous as to whether homosexuality is punishable by death. The Arabic of article 354 is written in such a way that it could be taken as condemning all male homosexual intercourse to the death penalty or only forced male homosexual intercourse

I can only assume that this response was sarcasm, to which I chuckled a little (but only a little). If not, then yes Don's response was irresponsible.

This answer is simple: if you come to EK, it would be wise to NOT bring or invite your gay family members, especially since there's a child involved.

As Laker said, it's vague if the penalty is death, which means it could be. So don't.

Not tolerated on the Airbus fleet then ?

Seriously, this is a country which jails rape victims for sex outside marriage.

azhkman 12th Mar 2019 01:26

Just have them book travel separately, go through immigration separately, and the child travel with only one parent. If they are staying with you, more than likely it wouldn't be an issue but best to not give the appearance of being a couple when out and about. The walls have ears.

sex outside of marriage is illegal....yet openly every night there are thousands of sex workers trolling every bar in town- nothing happens and they definitely turn a blind eye. There are lots of gays as well, again no problem 99.9999% of time, but there have been a few cases where things go wrong, and police are involved -then the law is not on your side. The biggest concern I have would be presenting in immigration as a family...

I didn’t realise that flying Boeings had such a stigma ;)

JAARule 12th Mar 2019 13:42

Funny, Don, I was thinking of a similar comment myself but managed to rein it in.

It's not just gay sex they don't like being caught out at but sex with the local fauna http://ugandansatheart.b log s pot.com/2017/06/uah-man-sentenced-for-having-sex-with.html Laker says you get death for gay sex but apparently it's only three months in the can for banging your camel.

(remove spaces in the link for it to work)

And the camel will be put down for having been defiled. Such a thing happened many moons ago here; don’t know if your link refers to the same case.

nolimitholdem 12th Mar 2019 22:29

I thought it was nice of don to jump in right away with a reply so he could contribute his fist-hand experience on such matters. Very generous. :ok:

donpizmeov 13th Mar 2019 04:01

You may even be correct with your statement nolimit. I do try me best .

The don

Lantern10 13th Mar 2019 05:56

fist-hand
Freudian slip?

donpizmeov 13th Mar 2019 08:10

He flew the Boeing Lantern .

nolimitholdem 13th Mar 2019 08:41

Trying to butch up with the repeated references to Boeing isn't fooling anyone, don. Just own it, no one is judging you.

There is usually a tendency to blow things out of proportion in the Sandpit. Your bro in law can come visit as long as he and his partner don't show PDA. It's not tolerated with any type of marriage. Loads of same sex couples, sex outside marriage, drinking, etc ....all done without drawing attention of the authorities or nosy neighbors. That being said that shouldn't be a deal breaker for you to join EK.....neither should the green carrot dip in the crew sandwiches or not using toll gates when going to/from work.

All the best with your decision

sheikhthecamel 5th Apr 2019 07:16

The facts about the law are quite clear. The penalties and the how they are implemented less so.
Clearly there is a risk involved. Probability of having a problem is low, but Consequences potentially severe.

That said, risk can be managed. If you chose to do so, the main risk mitigations in my mind would be to pay attention to the good advice copied below:

Also check your friends and family have not called anyone living in UAE any sort of animal on Facebook before coming here, that will get you arrested for sure - even if you did it while outside the UAE!!!!!!!!
This place is quite unbelievable - check the BBC https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-47847740

DXB is an Arab Benidorm living a double standard life almost under Sharia law, where carrying a Sudafed tablet for a blocked sinus will get you banged up

Benidorm Spain for me any day
