Crew baggage hassle
All luggage / baggage or packages must be screened and go through in company issued crew suitcases only. You will no longer be allowed to carry additional items as hand luggage The whole bs about our front page barbie and her "i love shopping when en route" is a bl..dy farce. Newbees take note! Just your pants and toothbrush fitting in the Samsonite, no more spare parts you can't get in the ME, no more sports equipment unless paying some silly local sponsor 100% surplus etc. |

Latest Flight Operations Update
|
If its not a FCI or FCN or in the books then it means jack shi..
Those weekly flight ops updates are not binding, just suggestive. I always laugh at these wankers who say "you can't do this" or you "can't do that", then when I ask where it is written they say "oh I read it 10 years ago in an email". "Show it to me then" I say, which of course they can't. Give me a break! The procedures for taking a leak are written in the OM-A now. When this one hits the books then I'll comply. |
What weekly updates? Its not easy to get onto work email. Must get a new computer when I get time.
|
I just don't understand the real intent.
If it's a grooming issue, why not just say that, If it's really a police requirement, well that just baffles me as a 100 million odd people come through the other terminals with all sorts of bag... what seems to be the problem? Everything is screened at the out station and screened again inbound at hq..... |
I guess the company will be re-issuing replacement steady wheelies forthwith, lest those of us who use our own "non company" issued flight bag have it confiscated as its non compliant.
|
Got to shift the blame somewhere else, so it is a police issue!
|
If it is really a 'police' issue then we will see soon enough because they will actually enforce the rule - so just ignoring this one will not work!
Nothing more than 'office staff envy'. Or at the least some minion believing he can show savings (suddenly since now there is a spotlight) and limiting crew bag weight looks good in his spreadsheet. |
Hey-zeus ahh-chay kree-stow! This place becomes a bigger joke by the day. So what are they gonna do, confiscate the personal suitcase of all the skippers who take that instead of waiting for our company approved bags to appear? Which, btw, I swear the bus drivers have a coffee or a kip between dropping us off and dropping our bags.
|
The weekly update refers states that it is Dubai police and Customs who have complained. Why? We are simply doing the same thing and the millions of passengers entering the UAE. When the law states that only hold luggage will be allowed into the country then, I guess we will have to comply. Until then, it is not against the law to bring a carry on item, e.g. duty free through customs.
If this rule is enforced, the duty free shop at baggage claim for us will have to be shut down. |
Exactly. Regulations and rules that will be enforced by the company must be in the operational library, IE. OMA, FCI, FCN etc etc. You are not required to read ASR summaries, weekly update, fleet facts, corporate communication etc. But you are required to know the books so again, once its in the OMA then I'll comply. Why do you think they put it in a weekly update? Why does this not apply to security in departures? Why does this not apply to security for passengers?
This is only because some oxygen thief is trying to save their job or someone in HQ security doesn't know the rules of theirs. |
What is the difference between us bringing things in through security as crew and a passenger bringing things in?
It has been fine for the years I have been here and now all of a sudden its not?? Why?? A ridiculous rule that just once again erodes at the quality of life. |
must be because immigration/security are too busy and understaffed at hq checkpoints.
gut the stealy wheelies of their dividers and it becomes useful. |
Most of you are misinterpreting this.
You will no longer be allowed to carry additional items as hand luggage. If you buy something and it fits in your (Samsonite) suitcase, it's fine. And no, you don't need to use the Stealie Wheelie. And if you don't want to use a suitcase, you don't have to, since you can use whatever you want as hand luggage. (There's no mandatory company hand luggage for pilots.) They must be talking about oversized packages that aren't allowed. |
I don't think there is any misinterpretation. If its not in your suitcase its not allowed anymore.
Why shouldn't we be allowed to? It has been the norm until now with no problems. Passengers can bring as they wish but we cant? |
A few years back AS put out a memo about bikes / golf clubs etc coming back from China . This sounds like the same.

So the crew arrivals duty free shop is closing now - one supposes 🤔
|
So, hauling my 20 kg's of best South African beef in a cooler bag will cease forth with.......:ugh::ugh::ugh:

Every emirates pilot right now

Only applies to EGHQ so freighter crews can still bring a bicycle or a BBQ into the country at OMDW.
|
Well said Seaman.....
Why all this craziness over a bag of ready-jerky? Or a box of car spares..... It's going through an x-ray machine anyway... so what's the fuss? |
Let's face it, this has nothing to do with Police or Customs at HQ, they don't care what you bring back and why would they? They may even charge duty on an item over a certain value so it wouldn't be in their interest to stop this...
This is just like us having to go back through HQ after a flight instead of going straight to T3 with the pax to catch an earlier flight, again blamed on the police saying we can't go through the airport in uniform etc. They don't care after all it's an airport it would quite likely to have someone walking around in uniform! This is just another "little internal" rule that's gradually chipping away at morale, well done! It wouldn't surprise me if this came from service delivery! |
Went through yesterday with my "non company" issue bags, asked the guys downstairs and the scanner guy upstairs, both gave a shrug and a smile. No problem, merely another mean spirited faux rule to keep the minions in line, maybe some upstairs don't like the fact that you can buy pork, wine, car parts at a rate that doesn't include the Habibi commission?

BOK449
You can go straight to the terminal, I've done it with carry on luggage, and nobody batted an eyelid. Just carry a GD with you, (advice from the FDM, who confirmed it's OK). |
@bok and blog, I frequently transit the terminal when trying to make a connection. GD in hand, but a change of clothes clearing customs.
Always cancel your transport, and beware the South Korean or Chinese grade 2 who will report you if they see you, best to just tell the FO etc. I have a couple of other things I do that keeps me under the radar, all common sense stuff, but nothing I'd post on an Internet forum, been doing this for the entire time I've been here, never had a problem. |
I never said that I didn't go straight to the terminal (have always done it during my annual summer commutes) I was just highlighting that this has nothing to do with Customs or Police as stated in the newsletter.
Same as the bag thing it won't affect me but it will affect many others who bend over to these unofficial "police and customs" rules... |
OMA section 20.5.3.5
I know this is for positioning crew "If arriving on EK, crew 'shall' proceed to EGHQ with the operating crew. Does that mean operating crew shall go to HQ also?
|
So again, where is this written in a company document that requires compliance?
You guys are getting your shorts in a knot over an email that you are not required to read, it means as much as an email from that millionaire in Nigeria. |

More to the point Outlaw, if the missive does come from Dubai Customs and Police then that has nothing to do with the OM-A... If it's not from them then ops normal as I see it!
|
Ignore it. It will eventually go away.
|
Soooooo,
They cleared that up, right??? Isn't it UAE Customs that we have to go through? Can't say I've ever seen a Dubai Police person in attendance?!?! Move along, nothing to see here... |
The guy at the bottom of the stairs when you get off the bus is police.
Stopped someone yesterday bringing a box in. This may be a problem! |
So now you can't even bring your own discrete black trolley bag for layovers instead you going to have to wait for your empty suitcase at the carousel adding even more time at work, I just love the way they've got a firm grip on the none essentials...it really is time to go!

No problem, as has been said before....it's packages. |
As with most measures, someone took it too far and ruined it for all the others. I flew with a guy who took back 2 big bags full of food for his dog. Both 40L, ask the police guy for a trolley...
|
It's not packages which is the problem Monarch Man, I wish it was that clear. The fleet update email makes it clear that cabin bags like the ones CC use, is not allowed. I've seen so many crazy, childish rules being spanwed here since I joined but this one has got to top it. What's next?
|
Simple. Use your old roller board suitcase as your flight kit, put your essentials in it for your layover and a few flight items. Then attach a "computer bag" on top with...whatever. You have completely adhered to their interpretation. They don't mention size.
