Sponsoring Step Children
 

Hi. I am neither a pilot nor involved in the aviation industry, but have been referred to this forum by a pilot friend. I am also posting my question on other UAE forums.

I am looking to take up a position in Dubai with my wife and her teenage son ( ie my stepson ). I am fully aware of the UAE requirements for sponsoring a stepchild, but the rules are very vague on how to proceed if the child's birth father is either refusing to acknowledge correspondence on this matter, or has in fact changed all contact details and is not actually receiving our request for permission from him. My wife and her ex did not part on amicable terms and he may be doing this out of spite. We simply don't know.

I have spoken to my nearest UAE Embassy and they say it's a legal matter, they cannot advise and I should speak to my potential employer. My potential employer is looking into it for me. Obviously if we cannot find a solution to this, I will have to decline a good job opportunity..

Has anyone on this forum been in a similar position, and if so, how did you proceed? Any help, information or advice is appreciated. Thank you.

You need a court order granting full custody to your wife (father then not required) and then you need to apply to sponsor the child on your UAE residence visa. Once you are sponsoring the child, your employer will give you all benefits associated with children such as education/medical/travel.

I didn't need a court order to sponsor my stepchildren... It was all very easy! And they have/had the full staff travel, education and medical benefits here at EK...

Thank you for the replies. Regarding a court order, in the child's birth country, once they turn 16, they are no longer considered a child, and a court order for custody is not granted to either parent, ie they are considered an adult. My step son has just turned 16, so a court order is not an option. I'm interested in how those without a court order managed to sponsor their step child. thank you.

Marriage certificate connects you to your wife.....birth certificate shows he is her son.......might need to have certificates attested but all that I required in Qatar

Just a quick update. My potential employer has advised me I will need to get a statutory declaration stating no objection from the birth father. As I've stated, he is not able to be contacted for permission, believe me, we have tried and exhausted all avenues to track him down.

For those who have said a custody order or notice of consent were not required, what documents did you use to obtain permission for your stepchildren?

Without the court order, the HR had the son listed as 'stepson X'. Which comes with limitations. The court order removed the 'X'.

I know this post is a little old but I need advice on this topic if anyone with experience is still reading.

I am working in the UAE (Abu Dhabi) as a Coastal and Civil Engineer with a residency visa. I have been here a year.

I have met a filipina and we will be getting married on 9th July. She has a child of 17months old in the Philippines who is being looked after by her sister, when we get married we would like to bring her daughter to live with us.

She currently works in the financial industry but she will be quitting her job once we get married and I will be sponsoring her as my spouse. Her daughter has no father listed on the birth certificate and the father was not filipino so there is no actual issues with custody etc but I know some people have mentioned needing an attested letter from the father that he has no objection on bringing her daughter here. As there is no father listed on the certificate there is a possibility that when we get married the National Statistics Office in the Philippines will change the certificate to reflect that I am the child's father. I don't know how this works but for now I am going to assume that this will not happen.

So does anyone have advice on the process for me to sponsor my future step child and whether the lack of a father on the birth certificate will cause us any issues etc.

Me too. I'm having difficulty in Abu Dhabi. They require letter from my step-sons father but am unable to locate him. Similar issue in Ireland when he needed a passport. Child is over 16, does that help in UAE?

could you please let me know how I (or my husband) can sponsor my children with visa in Dubai without the court order? We do not have a definite court in place and it may take years. Please, help me with the information. What do I actually need? I am not in a very good relationship with my ex - we do not even talk.

I would like to move to Dubai with my wife and wife's daughter (age 7). The biological father is not in custody of child however he and my wife is not in good relation. Possibly he will not accept signing and "No obligation letter" on behalf of the child.

It might be a bit late but if the father's name is left blank on the birth certificate, then you can adopt her daughter. You can call DSWD for guidelines regarding the process then you can go ahead with the sponsorship as normal. Father's permission is not necessary as long as the father did not sign the birth certificate. All rights and custody are with the mother.

My husband work in dubai and he want me and my daughter(from my previous marriage) to lived im dubai.
I got a legal custody of my daughter. Is it enough to apply family visa document? Or i still need a permitt letter from my daughter's father? Which is i have no idea where he is now and never even had a contact with my daughter. Please for advice. Thank you
