Ek How much of an issue is tropical disease
I thought I might post this question on this forum as EK seems to get to the most places around the world.
As I swatted a few mosquitos this morning on a return flight from a funny named but very big city in a tropical location, I was curious if there is any particular issue that you guys have/precautions taken/cases happened of pilots catching malaria/dengue/Chikungya(or whatever it is called). I'm not talking about guys who venture into the wilds on their day off, I'm talking about getting bitten on walkarounds/in the aircraft/hotel, etc. Do most people just not worry about it and everything is fine or is it a significant issue to be concerned about. |
There is a particularly nasty strain of Sandpititis going around at the moment, it is caused by multiple bites from multiple managers over the years.
Serious answer not really a problem for most. |
Ofcourse it is an issue.
Anybody who spent some time in Africa, knows. Part of the job, I guess. I Remember a FO scotch tape his hotel room door during a layover. I remember another guy jumpseating to Europe for 'better treatment' for his bad cold and headaches. He died from meningites a few days later. You do not get those things from flying 'around the church' in Europe. |
What do you want, safety or adventure? Adventure doesn't happen without risk. Given a choice, I'll take the adventuresome option any day of the week. But I realize it is not for everyone. I have spent some time in Africa, Asia, Central America, South America and the Middle East. And I lived to tell about it! I'll be headed out for another adventure soon. There was a day when I paid good hard earned money for my adventures. Now they pay me! Life is good.
And by the way, EK is not exactly a risky job. DXB is one of the safest places on earth, and EK will put you in the best hotel to be found in Lagos Nigeria if you're there. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being riskiest, EK, EY, QR and the other reputable airlines in the region are about a 2. GoForIt |
Tell me about it.....
BTW, you owe me dinner... |
